GREEN MOTORS PRACTICES GROUP Managed and Operated by Electric Motor Service Centers An Idaho Nonprofit Corporation Development assistance by the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance aided by the Bonneville Power Administration Visit www.greenmotors.org click on “about us” for contact information Presented by: Dennis Bowns

Electric Motor Repair/Rewinding It’s a simple machine, but to repair it properly, components and process must meet standards TM Craftsmen Saving Energy

RTF Incentive Approval July 2007 “The Effect of Repair/Rewinding on Motor Efficiency”, states little or no efficiency change when rewinding provided quality measures are used MotorMaster+ 4.0 default efficiency is lowered by ½ to 1% when motors are rewound TM RTF currently reviewing the Green Motor Initiative Craftsmen Saving Energy

Commitments and Incentives Craftsmen Saving Energy TM Members sign an agreement to follow standards and procedures proven to retain efficiency; Utilities (consistently) provide $2 per HP incentive. $1 as an instant rebate from the delivery rewind invoice and $1 to the service center.

Green Rewinds Reported to Date Rewinds produced 2,100 Total Horsepower 430,800 kWhs Saved 7,232,000 * Since 2009 Craftsmen Saving Energy TM

Failure Event’s Negative Impact on Efficiency 100% Power? % Out Increased Stator Res. Damaged Core Plate Increased Friction or Windage Increased Stray Losses TM Failure events (may/will) have more impact on efficiency than repair or rewinding Craftsmen Saving Energy

What Happens to Non-Compliant? Usually larger motors are rewound anyway and put back into service with reduced efficiency and reliability; Smaller motors, less than 40 or 50 HP, are more often replaced if available. TM Craftsmen Saving Energy

How to Help? Craftsmen Saving Energy TM Promote Green Rewinds with your electric motor end users (brochures available); Ask motor users to specify Green Rewinds; If a motor is rewound without the identifying nameplate or incentive, you and your customers should be concerned. Call Green Motors

Next Step Plans Re-establish RTF/NEMA Premium incentives to replace >50 HP non- compliant motors; It’s estimated that less than 50% of motors rewound comply because of core damages. Craftsmen Saving Energy TM

Re-establish NEMA Premium Expand GMI to include replacement of core damaged motors ; Require pictorial proof of replaced motor’s destruction; Add visual confirmation of destruction during verification site visits. TM Craftsmen Saving Energy

-Green Pumps Overview- The idea is to redress pump wetted surfaces with coatings that: o Smooth surfaces and; o Protect them from erosion/corrosion Markets include Industrial, Commercial and Ag Potential opportunity: o Another connection point to customers; o Potential for additional efficiency services and savings.

Another Step—Repairing Pumps Rule of thumb “pumps lose about 2% efficiency for each year operated”; If operated 5 years, expect about 5% efficiency improvement from internal coatings; Another 4-5% from quality repair procedures. Craftsmen Saving Energy TM 1% eff. improvement at 200 HP = one home’s energy use

Recent NYSERDA Study Overview of Key findings of “Energy Savings Through Pump Refurbishment and Coating”: Average efficiency improvement of 12% was obtained; o 5% from mechanical refurbishment; o 6% from internal coating (less impeller); o 1% from impeller coating; After 4 years coatings were stained but remained in good condition.

Work To Date Identified 35-40 pump-repair service centers of which 70% provide some coating services; Developed a coating selection and application draft Have begun preparation for RTF consideration sometime this summer

RTF Planned Presentations Craftsmen Saving Energy TM August or September 2012, Green Motor Rewind and NEMA Premium Replacement. June or July 2012, Pump Internal Coating;

Utility Engagement Promote the concept within the region; Work with local service centers; Participate in program design and data evaluation.

Questions or Commitments? Craftsmen Saving Energy TM Green Rewind Initiative; Motor Replacement Intervention; Pump Repair Enhancements.
