Questions to be Addressed  What should other engineering disciplines expect from MBSE : –Provide an efficient, integrated, collaborative, controlled and cost effective design environment for requirement and interface definition in support of system design maturation through the project life cycle.  What should system engineering expect from other disciplines to enable MBSE? –Desire to work in a more controlled and collaborative environment. –Ability and willingness to identify, document and FREEZE their terminology, processes and technical data exchange interfaces.

Questions to be Addressed 2) What can MBSE learn from model-based approaches used in other engineering disciplines?  Benefits: –Upfront investment ROI must be looked at from an end to end process. –Additional design rigor (better designs, less design errors) –Today's technology can and should be taken advantage of to help us develop our more complex systems. –Improve communication between engineering disciplines (removes engineering silos … resulting in design disconnects).  Challenges: –Seeking up-front investment funding to improve processes and tools. –Acquiring cross organizational (cross discipline) interest in model centric approaches is sometimes a challenge. –Additional design rigor (perceived hit on up front efficiency). –Configuration management complexity.

Questions to be Addressed 3) How should the practices and tools be integrated/coupled across disciplines?  Very methodically and carefully !! –DO not model for sake of modeling!  Identify up-front what are the needs and questions that the model should help us answer: Model Goals.  Consistently evaluate the model development plan against documented Model Goals. –Carefully identify and configuration manage cross discipline design data interchange parameters. –Use design data exchange automation as much as possible. –Make sure tool vendors are aware of any new cross tool integrated process and interdependency … AND make sure they are on board with supporting the interface to other dependant tools.

Questions to be Addressed 4) How are the system, hardware, and software models managed to ensure an integrated technical baseline?  In the JPL integrated electrical-mechanical cabling model centric tool and process this was/is being done by: –Effective use and customization of existing tool configuration management functionality. –Documented inter-discipline design exchange practices/agreements.  Not as easy as it may sound … currently being developed and validated through the design cycle.

Questions to be Addressed 5) How should a program be organized to achieve more effective utilization and application of model-based engineering?  Ideal scenario: Project, program, design process owners and engineering teams MUST be proponents of model-based engineering processes. –Facilitated by the tool and process improvement engineers being able to PROVE INCREMENTAL and END TO END benefits of model-based approaches.  In lieu if the ideal scenario: –Im also looking for answers, suggestions and approaches.
