One of the most versatile sources of energy for modern life is electricity: it’s easy to control can easily be converted to the other types of energy spinning electrical generatorThe power plant consists of a spinning electrical generator, which can be turned by: a water wheel in a hydroelectric dam a large diesel engine a gas turbine a steam turbine

1) Energy supplied by burning fossil fuels heats water in the boilers… 2) …to produce steam at very high pressure and temperatures… 3) …which then drives a turbine… 4) …connected to a generator. 5) The huge cooling towers transfer the energy from the steam to cooling water.

In a nuclear power station an isotope of uranium is bombarded with neutrons and the atoms split into two lighter ones (nuclear fission). The energy produced by this heats water, turning it into steam, which then drives a turbine. Chemicalheat kinetic electrical Chemical energy is turned into heat energy, which is transferred to the water. This causes the water vapour to move (kinetic energy) and turn the turbine. This turns the generator, producing electrical energy.ChemicalHeatKineticElectrical A hydroelectric power station uses the gravitational potential energy of water. Water flows downhill and turns a turbine which in turn turns a generator which produces electricity. This turns the generator, producing electrical energy.KineticElectrical NuclearHeatKineticElectrical

An electric generator is a device used to convert kinetic energy into electrical energy. “Electromagnetic induction“ was discovered in 1831 by Michael Faraday If an electric conductor is moved through a magnetic field, electric current will be induced in the conductor. offset 120 degrees three phases ground Power stations produce three - phase AC power. AC means the current changes direction Three phase power is three different phases of power simultaneously, offset 120 degrees from each other. There are four wires coming out of every power plant: the three phases plus a neutral or ground.
