How Thirsty Are You? John 19:25-30 “I Thirst” “It is Finished”

“I Thirst”  Jesus showed His deity while on earth.  Jesus also showed His humanity as He did here in His cry of thirst – Rev. 7:16. How Thirsty Are You? John 19:25-30

Revelation 7:16 (ESV) 16 They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat.

“I Thirst”  Answering the problem of pain and suffering  Denial that evil exists – Docetism  Control of our responses to good and evil, which do exist – Stoics  Pleasure first – says good and evil do exist but you just overwhelm evil with good – Hedonism  Life has no meaning at all, but we are to deal with it with a smile and pretend it means something – Existentialism How Thirsty Are You? John 19:25-30

“I Thirst”  Suffering is a result of sin in the world.  Sometimes, suffering is a natural consequence of our own sin.  There was no suffering in creation before the fall, and there will be none in heaven.  Jesus suffered for sin on our behalf.  We should embrace our suffering to glorify God and enter into others’ suffering to help. We are to redeem suffering! How Thirsty Are You? John 19:25-30

“I Thirst”  Prophesies were fulfilled in Jesus’ crucifixion.  The prophesy of “I thirst” is a unique one.  Jesus had nothing to do with some prophesies.  Jesus played a part in other prophesies.  In this case, Jesus controlled the prophesy.  The point here is that Jesus did something! How Thirsty Are You? John 19:25-30

Application What are you doing in your life to fulfill scripture? John 17:17 says, “Sanctify them by truth, your word is truth.” We will be sanctified! But what are you doing to allow this to happen in your life? What are you doing to keep the bond of unity in the Spirit? How Thirsty Are You? John 19:25-30

“It is Finished”  What is meant by “It is finished”?  No more sufferings  The work He had been sent to do was finished.  The fulfillment of the prophesies of His first coming  Finished  fulfilled – Luke 18:31; Luke 22:37; Acts 13:29
