2 Why a Positive Ageing Strategy? Significant ageing of the Region’s population 25% of the regions population is aged 60+ in comparison to 20% for NSW – equates to 78,270 By 2021 the number of people aged over 60 is expected to increase by approx 15,000 Ability to strategically respond to challenges & opportunities of an ageing population The overall aim is to support older residents’ lead healthy, active and independent lives, enhancing their participation in the community and quality of life

3 What is Positive Ageing? Positive ageing is about maximising the quality of life and wellbeing of older people Ageing is not just about physically getter older but the context in which people get older

5 Our Approach - Engagement Engagement 2,095 completed community surveys On-line survey with service providers Interviews with 40 individuals/couples Workshops with 15 groups 4 community forums (world café format) 150 participants Interviews with aged housing industry representatives/developers 2x COTA Central Coast Regional Consumer Reference Group forums

6 Strategic Priorities Key findings summarised into 6 priority areas: –Staying Healthy –Being Involved –Getting Around –My Community –My Home –Transition and Support

8 Being Involved Community connections Programs and activities Strength of volunteering Access to information “what’s on” Use of technology Lifelong learning Respect for older people

9 Getting Around Reliance on private car Licence retention & loss of independence Limited public transport Alternative transport options Active travel Mobility scooters Road safety education

10 My Community Importance of natural environment Village lifestyle Age-friendly infrastructure Proximity to Sydney & Newcastle Safe places

11 My Home Ageing in place Housing choice Affordability Care and support Residential aged care & retirement living

12 Transition and Support Flexible work options and programs to support older workers Retirement planning Access to services and information Economic development opportunities

13 Implementation WSC Action Plan to be developed around 6 priority areas Impact of ageing population will be felt across all areas of our business Establish Positive Ageing Reference Group (replaces Seniors Advisory Council) Well placed to work in partnership with other key agencies and community partners

14 Next Steps Draft Strategy for community comment – 2 – 27 June View at Council, libraries, senior citizens centres and online Opportunity to review and submit comments
