History…..well pre-history Documented Bahamian history begins with the words, "Baja Mar“ (shallow sea), the name the Spanish bestowed on the islands. The name is misleading as the Bahamas are known for their mountainous terrain. The first people’s of the Bahamas arrived from South American Columbus mistakenly referred to the locals as Indians after his landing in the late 1400’s.

History British influence and control in the area led to a high number of pirates entering the area. This ushered in what is known as the “Golden Age of Piracy”. This actually made the islands more wealthy in the 1700’s. Great Britain granted the islands self- government in 1964 and changed their status from colony to Commonwealth in 1969.

Things to Do… With calm, turquoise waters and soft, powdery sand, it’s no surprise when our beaches are recognized as some of the best in the world. Perhaps the most famous is Treasure Cay Beach in The Abacos. It was recently voted as one of the best in the region by Caribbean Travel & Life. Whether inland or submerged in the sea, the incredible blue holes of The Bahamas offer a truly unique dive experience. The greatest concentration of blue holes is found inland and in the shallows of Andros Island, where more than 50 blue holes have been recorded

Things to Do… The Abacos are a bird-watcher’s paradise and one of the few places in The Bahamas where you can find the endangered green Abaco or "Bahama" parrot, mainly in South Abaco near Hole- In-The-Wall. A subspecies of the Cuban Amazon parrot, they are known to be the only species of parrot throughout the Caribbean that nests in the ground.
6
Things to Do… We offer adventure tours, historical tours and cultural tours in scenic towns on the Eleuthera coast and in Harbour Island and Spanish Wells, including a look inside the magnificent Preacher's Cave.
7
Things to Do… Ecotourism is so important here that each year the community dedicates the entire month of October to pay homage to the natural environment. Andros is the ecotourism destination of The Bahamas because of its large pristine, terrestrial and marine ecosystems.
