Vocabulary 1. Yellow Journalism – sensational, biased and often false reporting 2. Armistice – peace agreement 3. Protectorate- an independent country which is under the control of another country 4. Territory- an area that is completely controlled by another country 5. Rough Riders- famous cavalry unit led by Theodore Roosevelt during the Spanish-American War 6. Battle of San Juan Hill- A crucial battle won by the Americans in Cuba (The Rough Riders led the charge!) 7. Platt Amendment – America gave Cuba full independence, but kept a naval base on Cuba, Guantanamo Bay

Main Events of the War I.) Remember the Maine EEvents in Cuba led to the war between America and Spain in 1898 CCuba, led by Jose Marti, wanted to rebel against Spanish authority – they asked the U.S. for help MMany journalists reported cruel treatment of the Cubans by Spain – angering Americans TThe battleship MAINE blew up in Havana Harbor, killing 260 crewmen – further angering Americans AAfter more demands back and forth, America declared war on Spain April 25, 1898.

Events of the War 1.) Commodore George Dewey led the US Navy to Manila Bay (The Philippines) They destroyed most of the Spanish Fleet The Philippines declared independence from Spain 2.) In the Caribbean, American troops blockaded the ports of Cuba. 3.) The U.S. and Cuban Rebels won several battles, including San Juan Hill (Rough Riders) 4.) The two sides declared an armistice on August 12, 1898 5.) 400 Americans were killed in battle; over 2,000 died of yellow fever, malaria and other diseases
