1. We made bread! When preparing and cooking a variety of foods, I am becoming aware of the journeys which foods make from source to consumer, their seasonality, their local availability and their sustainability. I can compare aspects of people’s daily lives in the past with my own by using historical evidence or the experience of recreating a historical setting.

2. Lets start from the beginning… We were comparing the food that people eat today with the food people would have eaten during medieval times. People would have eaten bread because the ingredients were easy to grow and it is easy enough to make. We had a go at making our own bread rolls.

3. First we washed our hands because we know how important being hygienic is.

6. We added yeast to our mixture because it makes the bread rise.

7. We added water so that our mixture would bind together. If we added too much then it got very sticky so we had to use more flour.

8. When our mixture was ready we removed it from the bowl and then divided it into quarters before kneading it – we had to use all our muscle here! Finally we rolled them into small ball shapes.

9. Our dough was then placed in a plastic tub and put in a warm place to be left to rise.

10. At the very end we washed our hands again.

11. Ready to be baked in the oven.

13. Et voila! Our medieval rolls are baked and ready to eat!
