E VERY L IFE H AS A P URPOSE… Instrument Selection

Instrument Reliability Verification –Calibration shall be conducted according to the manufacturer’s recommendations –At a minimum, a function check (e.g., bump test) shall be done prior to each days use. –An instrument maintenance record shall be maintained.

ISEA Definitions

Basic Rules –When not in use, keep instruments in a dry, clean environment –Maintain instrument fully charged at all times –Turn on instrument in clean air –Always bump test before use –Avoid Fresh Air Set Up (FAS) or zeroing reading before use –Where personnel must enter the confined space to complete atmospheric testing, the space shall be treated as PRCS. –Conducted in a manner that represents the atmosphere throughout the confined space –Keep in mind that air sampling may be needed –DO NOT use a tether to lower the instrument for reading. –ALWAYS follow manufacturer recommendation

Training  An explanation of the hazards  The hazard for which the PPE was selected  Proper use, inspection, care and maintenance, and limitations of PPE  An explanation of the permit system and other procedural requirements  How to respond to emergencies  Duties and responsibilities as a member of the confined space entry team.  The selection and proper use of appropriate atmospheric monitoring instruments

Ideal Instrument - Economy  Warranty – most come with 24 months  Sensor Life – most come with 18-24 months  Ruggedness – different IP ratings available  Reliability – Manufacturer R&D history  Low flow rate – cost of gas

Ideal Instrument - Safety  Easy to read and use – not complicated  Sensor tracking system – when will it die?  “Man Down” alarm – what if there’s no gas?  Personal Instant Alert – can they ask for help?  Battery life and charge cycle  Bump Test Verification  Fast response to hazard – when will you know?  Phosphorescence – A desirable feature

MSA Instruments  Over 100 years manufacturing safety equipment  3 Year bumper to bumper warranty on instrument  3 Year sensor warranty (including O2!)  IP67 – Water and dust tight (published test) .25 Liter per minute flow test (industry standard is.50)  End of sensor life indicator  “Man Down” alarm  Personal Instant Alert  24 Hour battery life (No memory)  Bump verification mark  15 seconds or less response (industry 20-45 seconds)  Glow in the dark option

Training Verification  Periodic assessment of the effectiveness of employee training shall be conducted by a qualified person.  Training sessions shall be repeated as often as necessary to maintain an acceptable level of personnel competence.  Written records of training shall be maintained and include as a minimum: –Employee’s name. –Trainer’s name. –Date(s) of training. –Training duration. –Training content.
