2. WHY IS MOUNT EVEREST FAMOUS? Most of you guys will of have heard about Mt.Everest. But why does everyone know about Everest? Its because it is the tallest mountain in the world. It stands at 8848 meters above sea level which is the same as 29029 ft. It is located in the Mahalangur section of the Himalayas (which is one of the biggest mountain ranges). The international border between China and Nepal runs across the precise summit point. It is 50 to 70 million years old Andrew Waugh who discovered Everest insisted that it be named after his role model, George Everest. Yuichiro Miura was the first person to ski down Everest.

3. TYPE OF MOUNTAIN Mt. Everest is a fold mountain which is in the Himalayas. Fold mountains are formed when two plates collide head on, and their edges crumble. It was formed in the last few million years when India moved slowly north towards Asia and then crashed into it. The seabed between the two plates was crumbled and pushed up on the northern rim of India to form mountains. These two plates of the earth's crust are still moving, so the Himalayas are being pushed up higher

4. USES OF EVEREST To climb so people can say that they climbed the highest mountain in the world. To challenge themselves on one of the hardest things a human can do.

5. CLIMATE AND ENVIRONMENT The climate of Mount Everest is naturally extreme. In January, the coldest month, the summit temperature averages about -36° Celcius and can drop as low as -60° Celsius In July, the warmest month, the average summit temperature is -19° Celsius. At no time of the year does the temperature on the summit rise above freezing One of the issues facing climbers is the high-speed winds. The peak of Mount Everest exposes it to the fast and freezing wind of the jet stream. In February 2004 a wind speed of 175 mph was recorded at the summit and winds over 100 mph are common. These winds can blow climbers off Everest.

6. ANIMALS FOUND A small black jumping spider has been found as high as 6,700 metres possibly making it the highest confirmed resident on Everest. Birds, such as the bar-headed goose have been seen flying at the higher altitudes of the mountain, while others, such as the chough have been spotted as high as the South Col at 7,920 metres.Yellow-billed choughts have been seen as high as 7,900 metres and the bar-headed geese migrate over the Himalayas. Yaks are often used to haul gear for Mount Everest climbs; they can haul 220 pounds, and have thick fur and big lungs. One common piece of advice for those in the Everest region is to be on higher ground when around yaks and other animals, as they can knock people off the mountain if standing on the downhill edge of a trail. Other animals in the region include the Himalayan tahr which is sometimes eaten by the snow leopard. The Himalayan black bear can be found up to about 4,300 metres and the red panda is also in the region. One science expedition found a surprising range of species in the region including a pika that eats its own faeces and ten new species of ants.

7. PLANTS FOUND There is a moss that grows at 6,480 metres on Everest. It may be the highest altitude plant species. An alpine cushion plant called Arenaria is known to grow below 5,500 metres in the region.
