Structuring Competencies with Learning and Evaluation Situations Support for Text 2 By Robert Huxley, Key person, TRA, November, 2009

A Cautionary Tale of what can happen when student’s brains are turned on! Once upon a time there lived a teacher who wanted to set a complex tasks for students. The teacher organizes a field trip to the big city. The teacher said to the students: Each of you has a beautiful barometer. I want to know the height of that skyscraper. You have one hour!

What would you do?

The teacher is a mountain climber. She thought the students would: Measure the pressure at the bottom Measure the pressure at the top Using the properties of air determine the change in altitude Voila! The building height

But One Student… Measured the height of the barometer Measured the shadow it cast Determined the ratio Paced off the length of the building’s shadow Used it with the ratio to determine the building’s height

And another student Ran down the street until the barometer looked like the same height as the door to the building He moved the barometer end over end until he reached the top He multiplied his result by 7 feet, the standard height of a door.

Two Students ran to the top of the building One dropped the barometer off the roof Timed it as it went down Multiplied her result by 32 feet per second squared Physics here I come!

The other student Also ran to the top of the building, but he took the fire escape. He counted stairs as he went and multipled his result by the standard 8 inches Phys. Ed. here I come!

Still another student stayed outside She counted the stories of the building She multiplied her result by four meters, standard height for a story and then went to play with the barometer Self-directed learner?

She was joined by a student who Created a street contest The prize was a brand new barometer to the first person who could prove the height of the building Who said entreprendership was dead?

A student interested in politics Promised the barometer to the building manager in exchange for the height of the building

Two students pulled out their cell phones One called the fire department to find out if their ladders would reach into buildings this high. Another called the city planner to see if it passed building regulations for maximum height. Future journalists?

A student interested in the working class Asked the window washers how high the building was.

A Cautionary Tale of what can happen when student’s brains are turned on! We need to stimulate students but, We also have to guide their learning. The Reform gives us the power to do both by choosing the right LES –For the student's prior knowledge –For the student’s abilities –So the student can learn by doing –So the student can learn by reflecting on what worked.
