3 SOAPSTone Intro… (mod 3) On April 11, 1962 President Kennedy addressed the American people regarding recently increased steel prices. Throughout his speech Kennedy utilizes a urgent/frustrated tone in order to convince common Americans that he is on their side. He does this through the use of anaphora, cause and effect structure, and parallelism (parallel structure).

4 SOAPSTone Intro… mod 5 On April 11, 1962 President Kennedy addressed the American citizens and the leaders of the steel industry. Throughout his speech he informs the citizens about the negative effects of increased steel prices by utilizing a frustrated tone. Through this frustrated tone, Kennedy employs anaphora, alliteration, and cause and effect structure to persuade the American people that the rising cost of steel is an outrage.

5 SOAPSTone Intros… (mod 2) On April 11, 1962 during a news conference, President John F. Kennedy gave a speech to the American people about rising steel prices. Throughout his speech President Kennedy uses multiple rhetorical devices to show the erratic behavior of steel executives and assure the public of his support against the rising cost of steel. He creates a disapproving tone through his use of anaphora, cause and effect structure, and patriotic diction.

10 Reflection: How is “Say Yes” ambiguous, complex, thought provoking, and provocative? BE SPECIFIC! EXPLAIN!

11 Flat or Round? Static or Dynamic? Flat & Static Characters = minor characters who does not change or grow in a story Round & Dynamic Characters = Major character who encounters conflict and is changed by it.

12 Thesis Statements Includes topic & claim: – Maryland should not change its law because children must learn responsibility and independence when left home alone. Does NOT include phrases like: – I think – You should – (really, anything with personal pronouns)

13 Story Review TitleWhat it’s about:ThemeWould you recommend it? What kind of person would enjoy it? “The Utterly Perfect Murder” Seeking revenge 36 years after being bullied as a child. What goes around comes around. Someone who was bullied (similar experiences). “Salvation”A young boy wanting to find Jesus, but doesn’t find him and then lies about his experience. Salvation can come from within rather than a higher power. People who are conflicted between religion and atheism. An atheist.
