155 2008-09 Q2 Benchmark Report2 Executive Summary The district’s system of benchmark assessments helps the district meet its obligation to monitor student progress using curriculum-embedded assessments. [Essential Program Component #5] K-8 achievement results were mixed across subjects and grade levels. At least 50% of the students tested in grades K-3 were proficient in English Language Arts and mathematics during the second quarter. At least 50% of the Filipino and White students tested in English Language Arts and Mathematics were proficient during the second quarter. From the first quarter to the second quarter, the achievement gaps between White students and their African American and Hispanic counterparts narrowed in mathematics. DataDirector reports provide sites with information which inform instruction related to specific areas and provide an indication of success on the California Standards Test (see Appendix A.) The following student groups, approximately one thousand, were exempted from some or all benchmark assessments: Student enrolled in Special Education Special Day Classes (SDC) Language! students (replacement core) Students enrolled at one of the High Priority schools (Live Oak, Needham, and Washington)

To inform teachers and administrators on student progress and effectiveness of instruction in the adopted standards- based core curriculum. To provide timely data to teachers and administrators to make decisions that will improve instruction and student achievement. To provide data to identify students who need interventions. To assist in the monitoring of individual student progress.

As a Program Improvement district, LUSD is required to implement the 9 Essential Program Components (9 EPCs) as determined by the State. Essential Program Component #5 requires the district to use data as the basis of its K-8 student progress monitoring, including the use of curriculum-embedded assessments (e.g. every six to eight weeks) to inform and modify instruction. Mandatory testing in English Language Arts and Mathematics Optional testing in Science and History

155 2008-09 Q2 Benchmark Report18 DataDirector: Implementation Challenges & Resolutions Scanning difficulties, older Brother scanners Increased quality control step due to real-time uploading Brother scanners, which are generally 4+ years or older, did not produce consistently reliable scans Availability of an optional centralized scanning service provided to schools and the replacement of the Brother scanners with newer Fujitsu scanners. Printing of Answer Sheets Current printing instructions differ from those of the previous data management system Technical assistance, training, availability of additional user helps, and assistance of Technology Services. Report Card Importing data Technical assistance, User’s Guide 2 nd Quarter Assessment Collaboration Day System capacity increased and system tested on 1/21/09 Common Planning Day.
