The United States feared that European nations might try to reconquer its former Latin and South American colonies 1.The Monroe Doctrine declared that the United States would oppose any attempt by European countries to establish new colonies in the Western Hemisphere. The Western Hemisphere was no longer open for colonization by European countries 2.The U.S. would oppose the reconquering of former colonies (Mexico) that had achieved independence 3.The U.S. agreed not to interfere with existing colonies under European rule (Canada, Cuba)

Florida Territory General Andrew Jackson was sent into Florida to stop Indian raids. Instead, Jackson attacked several Spanish Forts. Spain was fearful of losing Florida so negotiated with Monroe.

The Adams-Onis Treaty gave the U.S. control of Florida from Spain in 1819 for $5 million dollars.

Maine was admitted as a free state and Missouri a slave state. Compromise set a pattern by admitting one free and one slave state at a time and maintained a balance between slave and free states in Congress. A Line was drawn (36-30 degrees) to end any future debate over slavery…..…at least they thought Missouri Compromise 1820

A time period of little to no political opposition….Federalist party had dissolved. Democratic -Republican Party ruled for almost 30 years 1800-1829
