Reaction Rate Labettini PURPOSE: To demonstrate factors that affect reaction rate To confirm that reaction rate is determined by rate of collisions between atoms or molecules MATERIALS: Pipette & 10 ml grad cylinder 50 ml beaker with copper chloride solution 50 ml beaker with water Test tube rack, test tubes (2), stir stick 4 pieces of aluminum foil — similar in size Timer Add 6 ml CuCl 4 to one test tube. Place test tube in hot water bath.
2
Reaction Rate Labettini DATA TABLE: CONTROL: Slip aluminum foil strip into test tube Add 6 ml of CuCl 4 and start timer Stop timer when reaction is complete Record time in table as “Control” Dump test tube in orange bucket & rinse at sink PROCEDURE 1: Effect of concentration Repeat, but add 3 ml H 2 O first, then 3 ml CuCl 4 Record in table as “Low Concentration” ConditionTime Control Low Concentration Low Surface Area High Temperature
3
Reaction Rate Labettini PROCEDURE 2: Effect of surface area Roll foil into very tight ball & drop into test tube Use grad cylinder to add 6 ml of CuCl 4 and start timer Stop timer when reaction is complete Record time in table as “Low Area” PROCEDURE 3: Effect of temperature YOU WILL NEED TO WORK QUICKLY Put foil in empty test tube Retrieve hot CuCl 4 Pour into first test tube, and start timer Stop timer when reaction is complete Record time in table as “High Temperature”

Reaction Rate Labettini QUESTIONS: 1.Explain why reducing the concentration slows down the reaction. Be sure to refer to collisions of molecules. 2.Explain why reducing the surface area slows down the reaction. Be sure to refer to collisions of molecules. 3.Explain why increasing the temperature speeds up the reaction. Be sure to refer to collisions of molecules.
