4 Part 3 Dialogue — Planning your future career (A=Dr. Anderson, a career counselor; B=Bill, a college student) A: Hello, Bill. How ’ s it going? B: Just fine. Dr. Anderson, I ’ d like your advice on my career preparation. As a junior, I guess I should start to prepare for my professional goal. A: Yes, It ’ s time. Oh, how time flies! Just think the first time you came to me — when you were a nervous and kind of scared college freshman. B: Ah, how funny I looked then. It was you who gave me confidence. A: I was happy that I could be of help. B: Through talking with you, I learned that what I should choose to do as a leaving depended greatly on the characteristics I had. A: And what u did was really a brilliant job during the first two years on campus! B: Well, I admit that throughout my freshman year, I sought every chance to develop my skills and abilities and build up a wide range of interest.

5 A: So, when college became a familiar routine to u in your sophomore year, you started learning about profession. B: Yes. Under your guidance, I began to seek information from the world of work and make a long list of professions that match my skills, values and interest. I ’ ve researched the duties, qualifications, salary and employment outlook for each job I am interested in, read books and periodicals and talked to professionals in the field. A: I know. And I remember how excited and confident u looked when you came to me and told me that u finally selected your professional goal. B: Yeah. It was good for me to begin planning for the transition from college to career at an early point. Actually I ’ ve gained quite a lot both in knowledge and experience. A: I ’ m very glad you ’ ve had a good beginning. But do remember that u still have a long way to go. a college education helps u to start on your career journey, however, it is up to u to manage the direction, duration, and success.

6 B: Yes. That ’ s why I come here to ask for your advice. As a junior, how can I best prepare for my future career. A: Well, the best preparation is that u acquire the necessary education and experience. They will facilitate your pursuit of a full-time career. B: Does that mean besides taking relevant courses I should get involved in internship or part-time jobs to obtain related work experience? A: That ’ s right. Your academic training and work experience will form a good basis and will help greatly open many employer ’ s doors.

Rule: The affirmative side( 正方 ) and the negative side ( 反方 ) should both refute the other ’ s idea and prove oneself true through reasoning and exemplification.
