Art School for Children in Sapa Introduction This project is for the children in Sapa, one of the most traveled tourist towns in the alpine region of northwest Vietnam. Currently, the only way the Sapa children make a living is by selling handmade souvenirs to tourists. The purpose of this project is to create a brighter future for the children by establishing a new way of income by equipping them with art performance skills. Background of this project. Yun Woo Si company was founded by Mr. Kim E Won and is aimed at big corporations in South Korea that seeks to educate its employees on presentation and performance skills. Mr. Kim from the YWS co. was traveling abroad in Vietnam where he experienced the living situations in Sapa firsthand. Seeing the children in Sapa, many of them under the age of 5, trying to make a living by selling handmade souvenirs was devastating. Furthermore, seeing the reactions of the tourists who turned them away was heartbreaking and inspired Mr. Kim to find a way to make a difference for the children in Sapa. The Scheme In the place of selling souvenirs we can provide a way for the children to make a living through traditional Sapa performance. In order to do so, sponsorships and fundraising is necessary to support the program while it is being established.

The blueprint The main intent of this project is to get the children off the street vending and into the arts program where they have a way not only to make money, but to express themselves as well by performing traditional dances and songs. If this project is a success in Sapa, this program can be used as a template for other towns and cities where children are being affected by the poverty level that don’t have the means to make a living. Long-term affects Because the objective of this project is to teach the traditional dance it will be in collaboration with natives who are familiar with such traditions. Instead of having a performance that was adapted from a different culture into Sapa, the performances will revolve around the local culture and customs. The instructors and volunteers who play a part in this project will have a rewarding, learning experience about the cultures and social interactions of Sapa by participating. This project is not to be run by a religious group or by the NGO buy by volunteering artists only. Art is often seen as a leisure activity and is related to the richer, upper class. However, opening this program as an early child development could help the children in the future. With the training that will be provided, they could be lead to other more rewarding career tracks as they grow up. Although the focus of this project is on young artists at this time, as the program grows this could change. It is a possibility that this could lead to medical and educational programs in Sapa as well. In the early stages of this program, the participation offers will be limited to Korean artists. However as the curriculum grows, YWS Co. hopes to open up the volunteer program to artists from all around the world. Blueprint of this Project

Current state of this project and organization of administration Current state Currently, we have already acquired instructors in Korea to send to Vietnam as well as back-up instructors who are willing to accommodate the growth in the Sapa program. In Vietnam, there’s a collegiate coordinator who will assist in the administration and is at this time putting together a local team that can help in Vietnam in order to acquire more systematic and detailed supports. Also we are in the process of casting a dance instructor who is familiar with Vietnamese performance art that will work with the Korean choreographer. The fundraising efforts will continue until December of 2010. If the monetary goal is not met by December, the fundraising will continue, instructors will be sent January of 2011 as the fundraising goes on. Director Kim.
