Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) Amount of oxygen used by a body of water over a specific period of time Lower BOD= less Oxygen Demanding Waste – Healthy stream has a BOD of 5-20 mg of O 2 Higher BOD= greater Oxygen Demanding Waste – Human waste water has a BOD of ~200 mg of O 2
