3 Your child will have 5 spelling words each week. Study these words for spelling tests on Friday. use help past produce present They will write them on this page.

4 Parent Communication Folder This is our PRIMARY source of communication! Please check through this folder each night for important information and items you may need to sign. Return each day!

5 Your child will receive reading each night to do throughout the week. You can read any additional interest books as well. These books could include library books, newspapers, recipes or even comics. Please make sure that you record the titles on the reading log in your child’s take home folder. 6 Parent Communication Folder – Red Plastic Write down ALL books that your child reads to you each night on the reading log in your child’s take home binder including any additional books you read at home. Your child’s monthly reading goal is 25 books or more.

9 Your child will have a take home finished work folder similar to this. Remove all the work and keep the finished work at home. Talk with your child about the things they have done in class. Great opportunity to help your child correct work for extra practice. Sign & date log inside, return the next day.

16 Title I Information

17 What is Title I? Title I is the largest funded educational program in the United States of America. Title I, the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, provides supplemental funds to school districts to assist schools with the highest student concentrations of poverty to meet the school educational goals.

18 THERE ARE 11 TITLE I SCHOOLS. How do schools qualify to receive Title I Funds? Schools qualify by demonstrating that the K-12 membership has a sufficiently high percentage of economically disadvantaged students. Title I regulations require school districts to provide services to all schools where at least 75% of the students qualify for free and reduced price meals.

19 12 School wide Title I Schools There are twelve school wide Title I schools consisting of eleven elementary schools and one middle school. 20 Over 60% of Surry County Schools students live in poverty. Why are Title I funds allocated to high poverty schools? The purpose of Title I is to ensure that all children have a fair, equal and significant opportunity to obtain a high quality education and reach high academic achievement. School wide Title I schools should be at least 40% or more poverty to qualify for funding. The average poverty percentage for the Surry County School District is over 60%.

21 How do Title I programs function? Title I programs work to: Identify the students most in need of educational help; Set goals for improvement; Measure on-going student progress; Develop programs that add to regular classroom instruction.

22 How are Title I funds allocated to schools? Once a school qualifies, funds are then allocated in the spring based on a formula that projects the number of qualifying children at the school for the next year.

23 How can the Title I funds be used at the school site? School wide Title I programs have the flexibility to use Title I funds to upgrade the operation of the entire school and to promote: – High academic achievement for all children; – A greater focus on teaching and learning; – Increased stimulation for intervention/ instruction coupled with responsibility for student performance; – Improved communication among schools, parents and communities.

24 How does Title I affect teaching? The intent of Title I is to ensure that students receive an education from highly qualified teachers and staff. These educators improve their skills through research based professional development.

25 What are the purposes of Title I programs in the Surry County Schools? Preparing SCS Students for the 21 st Century Title I Programs provide funds to the district in order to assist schools with the highest levels of disadvantaged students to: Improve achievement for all students Improve staff development Involve parents and community

26 What are the requirements of Title I? School wide Title I Schools are required to: Conduct a comprehensive needs assessment to identify goals and strategies to meet student needs; Revise School Improvement Plans annually; Provide supplemental instruction and intervention to meet student needs.

Title I funds can be used for many types of parent activities: – Family Literacy Activities – Parent Meetings – Parent Trainings Night or Day – Materials that parents can use at home to work with their children Parents can help their children be more successful by teaching them ways that add to what the teacher is doing: – Find out what your child needs to learn – Keep in touch with your child’s teacher – Make sure your child does his homework – Attend parent –teacher conferences – Talk with your child about school

30 Language Arts Students learn to read in First Grade. They learn strategies and skills to help them not only read words but comprehend/understand what they read. Good readers need to use all reading strategies. Students should frequently practice reading in order to be fluent or read like we speak. First Grade students should be at a level 17/18 or higher by the end of this year. For example: This is a level 5-6 book. They should be able to read this at the beginning of first grade. This is a level 17-18 book. They should be able to read this at the end of first grade.

31 You will receive this report with your child’s progress report on October 1 st. This is a summary of their beginning of the year (BOY) language arts assessments. Look for the running man to see where your child is in being where their goal is for first grade. This is the running man.

32 Writing The students are expected to be a developing or a early independent writer by the end of first grade. We look for the following things when assessing your child’s writing: – Recounts two or more appropriately sequenced events. – Uses transition words to signal event order. – Provide a sense of closure. – Includes details that describes what happened. – Uses some common, proper, and possessive nouns correctly. – Uses singular and plural nouns with correctly matching verbs. – Produces correct simple and compound sentences. – Capitalizes correctly and consistently with a minor error. – Uses commas in a series and with a conjunction correctly; uses end punctuation correctly. – Applies conventional spelling for words with common spelling patterns and frequently occuring sight words. Spells untaught words phonetically. This is early developing. Your child should be able to do this at the beginning of first grade. This is developing.
