5 | 5 Our Mission and Commitment ICANN is not an ICT Developmental Agency, but…… We do have a mission to ensure an open, interoperable and stable global Internet And a role of coordinating and supporting unique identifiers (such as Names and IP Addresses) across the world Thus cannot say we are meeting mission or fulfilling role unless we have functioning and strong global DNS

7 | 7 Progress So Far Regional Strategies – starting in Africa bit now also in Middle East, Latin America and Asia Enhanced relationships with governments globally; including Missions in New York and Geneva Enhanced relationships with IGOS; including ITU at global and regional level, UNESCO and UNCTAD Development of IDNs

8 | 8 Global Internet - Internationalised Domain Names (IDNs) IDNs permit the global community to use a domain name in their native language or script ICANN has instituted the IDN Program to assist and promote the multilingual Internet using IDNs Program focused on planning and implementation of the IDN Top-level Domains (TLDs) that include ccTLDs and gTLDs IDN Program also supports and undertakes projects geared towards effective deployment of IDNs at the second-level, as guided by the community ICANN has become global to also support IDNs and operations

9 | 9 Opportunities ahead With the recognition of role of ICTs in implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Work with UN Agencies and Missions, in NY and Geneva Engage at WSIS Forum and at CSTD Engage with I* and wider technical Community Closer to home; help ensure more global and diverse take up of TLds during next round

13 | 13  Agreement signed between ICANN and Egypt’s NTRA at ICANN 50 meeting in 2014  DNS-EC to serve as a repository for DNS knowledge and expertise  ICANN through partnerships with regional and international experts provides training and mentoring programs  NTRA incubates DNS-EC during the start-up phase and provides staff / logistical support The DNS Entrepreneurship Center (DNS-EC)

20 | 20 Key Roles of this Office 1.This will be the Main Engagement Centre for Africa Possibility of other satellite Offices / Centers in other regions in Africa (North Africa, Southern Africa or Western Africa) The Office will sever the whole of Africa 2.This Office will serve as ICANN’s foot hold and provide our physical presence in Africa 3.Support the 3 ICANN Africa staff especially as an Institutional Engagement focal point with AF*, Governments and I* organizations in the continent 4.Further, the activities of the Main Engagement Centre will be defined and managed by GSE Africa.
