The Divinities

THE ROMANS The Romans are polytheistic (=pagans), and so they have many divinities. They have built a lot of temple for them, in which they can sacrifice animals or give gifts, in return for divine help.

Roman religion was influenced both by religion traditions of inhabitants of Italy(in that period: Etruschi, Sabini, Sanniti, Latini), and, after Greece’s occupation, by Greek religion. The particular characteristic of Romans’ religion is that it was really open to other religions, cerimonies, customs.

The pax romana (Roman peace) was the law that regulates this aspect: 1.respect for religion, political and social traditions, of defeated population 2. integrate them to law and to jurisdiction of Rome. The symbol of this religious communion is the Pantheon, a little temple for all Romans divinities.

The most important divinities for Romans are the “ancestors”, in other words dead members of family. For this cause, they say that Romans had the cult of ancestors.

The ancestors are divided into: LARI, divinities that protected the house PENATI, divinities that protected the family MANI, ancestors’ spirits

In addition to ancestors, Romans had other divinities very similar to Greek divinities, but with another name. Each divinity had a different role.

protected domestic focus. The priestess of temple had to care about goddess’ focus: it should be burning.

Father of all divinities and people. He was depicted as an adult man, with long hair and dense beard. His symbols are: lightning and eagle.

Giove’s wife, she protected marriage and maternity. She was depicted with a diadem or veiled head. Her symbols are: peacock and crow.

She is the second feminine divinity most important: she was the divinity of intelligence and wisdom, but also of war. She was depicted with helmet, shield and lance.

He was the divinity of commerce. He was also the messenger of divinities. He was depicted with wings near feet.

She is the divinity of love and beauty. Her and Marte’s son, Cupido, is the second divinity of love. He throwed his arrows, and people hit, fell in love.

He was the divinity of water. He live in the bottom of sea, he commanded storms. He was depicted on a cart pulled by sea horses with a trident in the right hand, symbol of power.

He was an half- divinity, because he was born from Giove and a mortal mother. He become a divinity because he invented the wine. He was depicted with a wine glass and grapes.
