The Sonnet

A sonnet is a fourteen line lyric poem that is written in Iambic Pentameter. By the end of the 16 th century, it had become the leading form of love poetry.

Sonnets There are two types: 1. The Italian or Petrarchan Sonnet –Named from 14 th century Italian poet named Petrarch –Rhyme scheme: consists of an octave (eight line stanza) and a sestet (six line stanza)

Sonnets The English or Shakespearean Sonnet –Consists of three quatrains (four line stanzas) and a final couplet (two lines) –Each quatrain explores a different aspect of the poem’s subject, and the couplet presents a concluding comment.

Common Themes of Sonnets Love Lost love The admiration of a fair-haired beauty

Literary devices found in Sonnets Alliteration Consonance FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE: Personification Simile Metaphor Conceits

Petrarchan Sonnets Many Petrarchan Sonnets include Petrarchan Conceits A conceit is a startling, and often elaborate comparison between two apparently different things. –Like comparing “love to the ocean”

Iambic Pentameter Iamb – a two part rhythm comprised of one unstressed and one stressed syllable. One Iamb is called a foot. The length of a sonnet line is a pentameter or five iambic feet.

An example: “She used to let her golden hair fly free.” she USED to LET her GOLden HAIR fly FREE.

Petrarchan Sonnet rhyme scheme: The Octave (the first 8 lines) –abba abba (usually) The sestet (the last 6 lines) –One of the following: cdecde, cdcdcd, or cdedce

Rhyme Scheme, con’t… The Octave often poses a question. The Sestet often brings closure to the question.

Let’s break it down with Petrarch’s “Laura” On your copy, identify: –the iambic pentameter by marking the stressed/unstressed syllables above the words of each line. –Any use of figurative language (metaphor, simile, personification, conceit) –The rhyme scheme (a b c d e)

Time for YOU to be Petrarch! With a partner, or by yourself, you will write a proper Petrarchan sonnet about one of the following topics: –Spring Break –Graduation –Your last summer before college –Your topic of choice –BE APPROPRIATE!

Remember! You must have the proper number of lines, divided into an octave and sestet. Your rhyme scheme must follow the Petrarchan model. Each line must be in iambic pentameter. Must contain at least one example of each type of figurative language.
