Chpt. 21 BOS: Organisms and Pathogens

Vocabulary Define the words and abbreviations below: taxonomy biological nomenclature Binomial Child-Pugh score Child-Turcotte-Pugh classification

Answer Key Taxonomy- refers to the classification, or organization, of scientifically named organisms to reflect their relationships to each other. biological nomenclature-or the naming of living things, refers to the assignment of names according to international rules. Binomial-is the species name, not just the second term, or specific name. Child-Pugh score- This classification system measures the degree of end-stage liver failure resulting from prolonged hepatitis and cirrhosis. Child-Turcotte-Pugh classification-same as above.

Scientific vs. Common names What is the difference between a scientific name and a common name? When is it appropriate to use the common or vernacular name? What are the rules for transcribing these two names? Give me a specific example.

Taxonomy What are the 6 taxonomic groups? 1.______________________ 2.______________________ 3.______________________ 4.______________________ 5.______________________ 6.______________________

Answer Key 1.Kingdom 2.Division 3.Class 4.Family 5.Genus 6.Species

Genus and Species Names What are the capitalization rules for transcribing genus and species names? Give me two examples of common ones that you have come across in your transcriptions. 1.__________________________ 2.__________________________

Child-Pugh score Name the 5 measures of liver disease and how they are scored. 1.______________________ 2.______________________ 3.______________________ 4.______________________ 5.______________________

Answer Key 1.Bilirubin 2.Serum albumin 3.INR 4.Ascites 5.Hepatic encephalopathy

What is INR? Research INR on the internet and find out what it is and how it relates to the Child-Pugh score. Is it important to know what the normal and abnormal International normalized ratios are for liver function? If yes, why? If no, why not?

Answer Key International Normalized Ratio (INR) The INR is a measure of the amount of time that it takes for the blood to clot. It's a ratio of the sample's clotting time and the reference clotting time. Low clotting times are associated with good liver function and the normal range is 0.8 to 1.2. Mild cirrhosis may be associated with values between 1.2 and 1.7, an INR between 1.71 and 2.2 can mean moderate cirrhosis and an INR greater than 2.2 may indicate severe cirrhosis.
