2 Aims of the Orientation Session To explain the objectives and expected outcomes of the course To review and confirm the course program (timetable)

3 Background  Decent Work and environmental sustainability are 2 of the defining challenges of the 21 st century  These 2 challenges are a direct result of the current neo-liberal model of development which is:  Incapable of creating sufficient decent jobs  Socially unjust; and  Environmentally unsustainable  Solutions to these 2 challenges [in terms of creating a delicate balance between economic growth, social progress and ecological preservation i.e. the 3 pillars of development] can work in synergy to simultaneously realize:  The right to development  Create decent jobs [youth and women]  Lift hundreds of millions out of poverty  Move towards a sustainable and low-carbon economy

4 Development Objective Contribute to the enhancement of the environmental knowledge and skills of trade unionists so as to enable them play a more constructive role to mitigate the effects of dangerous climate change and influence policies aimed at creating decent employment for all in the transition towards a green economy

5 Immediate Objectives At the end of the course participants will be able to:  Analyse the main environmental challenges of our time and identify the opportunities for the generation of decent work through a rights-based approach as an integral part of an overall effort to the promotion of a socially inclusive green economy  Explain pro-labour approaches, tested tools and good practices aimed at achieving a new pattern of production and consumption that is environmentally-friendly and sustainable  Share experiences on trade unions’ action on environmental issues at different levels  Develop individual action plans as means of transferring the knowledge and skills gained to achieve multiplier effect

6 Expected Outcomes Advanced knowledge and labour education capacity of trade unions in Africa on green job initiatives, decent work and sustainable development that would enable participants to:  Raise awareness among their leaders and members about the fundamental issues of sustainability namely: economic growth, social progress and environmental preservation  Articulate forward looking policies for a realization of green jobs, decent work and sustainable development  Strengthen knowledge development and dissemination on the impact of environmental degradation on jobs and livelihoods  Strengthen campaign for a new growth model that ensures a balance between economic growth, social progress, decent work and ecological preservation  Build the membership base of trade unions using the Green Jobs, Decent Work and Sustainable Development initiative as an organising tool

8 METHODOLOGY  The training course will be participatory and will involve a variety of active learning methods and interactive sessions  We grave your indulgence to be active and participative throughout the course  Your experience would not only inform everyone but also enable all of us to come up with Action Plans to address relevant challenges

9 Strategy  Each participant will prepare a follow up Action Plan to enable him/her transfer the knowledge and skills gained to his/her union and co-worker  The individual Action Plans will be used for impact assessment and as yardsticks in determining future follow-up activities  Guidelines for preparing follow up proposal will be provided at the appropriate time

10 Evaluation  Daily course evaluation  Mid-term course evaluation  End of course evaluation

11 Participants’ Responsibilities  Be active & participative in all activities through out the course as your experience is a valuable source of education for all, including us  Be PUNCTUAL! – please…..  Be PUNCTUAL! – please…..  Daily Report in the morning of each day: Each participant will inform the group of one or two key ideas that they learnt or found useful from the previous day’s sessions  Come up with ideas for follow up work plan
