Experiment Support CERN IT Department CH-1211 Geneva 23 Switzerland www.cern.ch/i t DBES IT-ES Group Meeting November 3 rd 2010

CERN IT Department CH-1211 Geneva 23 Switzerland www.cern.ch/i t ES Welcome First of all, welcome to all new members of the group! The purpose of this meeting is to clarify the group mandate and directions for the short, medium and (even) long term Short: months; Medium: a few years, Long: LHC lifetime

CERN IT Department CH-1211 Geneva 23 Switzerland www.cern.ch/i t ES Mandate Mandate: Coordinate the WLCG service & assist the experiments in their use of this service. Lead the HEP Virtual Research Community (VRC)activity & Services for Heavy Users (HUCs). This mandate covers not only the “core” IT-ES functions but also extends to projects such as PARTNER, ULICE and EnviroGRIDS and bridges to EGI-InSPIRE Thus we have one strategy covering all activities

CERN IT Department CH-1211 Geneva 23 Switzerland www.cern.ch/i t ES Short-term: up to next run (months) We need to have a clear set of deliverables, e.g. what improvements / developments can be made available for the 2011 LHC run? We need to incorporate all new and expected staff / fellows into the group Start regular Technical Meetings (every 2 weeks) & Activity Working Groups –From 10 Nov in 513 1-027 & again from 5 Jan Prepare a detailed workplan for IT-POW, 2011 MARS We need to have a well-advanced plan for sustainability (2013+) – EGI-InSPIRE deliverable due April 2011 (short-term task affecting medium-long term)

CERN IT Department CH-1211 Geneva 23 Switzerland www.cern.ch/i t ES Medium-term: EGI-InSPIRE lifetime (years) EGI-InSPIRE gives us a significant manpower boost until end April 2013 and allows us to bridge all activities of the group EGI-InSPIRE work must be regularly reported (weekly, quarterly, (bi-)annually) and numerous milestones & deliverables –TSA3.2: shared tools and services –TSA3.3: services for HEP At the same time we need to prepare for the longer term: –Post EGI-InSPIRE; FP8 and others?

CERN IT Department CH-1211 Geneva 23 Switzerland www.cern.ch/i t ES Metrics & Milestones In April we discussed the importance of milestones & metrics for all activities and to review them on a quarterly basis This is mandatory in EGI-InSPIRE and IMHO good practice in any case We also need longer term milestones: CHEP is a good example of what can be achieved in the medium term –CHEP 2012 in NY, 2013 in London? Compare with contract duration, project lifetime etc.

CERN IT Department CH-1211 Geneva 23 Switzerland www.cern.ch/i t ES Sharing the load There are many activities that we need to share – these include EGI-InSPIRE related work (milestones, deliverables, QRs, etc), IT-homework (Service Catalog) plus of course our daily work We expect EVERYONE to participate in these – all of which are necessary Thanks to all who have volunteered so far!

CERN IT Department CH-1211 Geneva 23 Switzerland www.cern.ch/i t ES Group Structure We now have two sections aligned with the EGI-InSPIRE SA3 workpackage –Dashboards & Ganga Provide experiments with grid monitoring and dashboard tools. Support the LHC experiments and others in their use of Ganga –VO Operations & Services Help the experiments in integrating their software with grid middleware, assist them with their operations, support the persistency framework and VO services / tools as part of the move to sustainable operations (“Heavy User Communities”) Many activities span sections: Activity Working Groups as mentioned above

CERN IT Department CH-1211 Geneva 23 Switzerland www.cern.ch/i t ES Futures We are preparing a VN for an LD slot We expect mobility to discussed at the POW We have asked for an investment to prepare for FP8 projects (2014+) Opportunities in working groups, milestones and deliverables, plus many others

CERN IT Department CH-1211 Geneva 23 Switzerland www.cern.ch/i t ES If you have a concern? Please try talking about it first within the group Maybe the issue can be readily solved – or at least explained / understood

CERN IT Department CH-1211 Geneva 23 Switzerland www.cern.ch/i t ES Summary This group meeting should be an opportunity for discussing / clarifying the direction that IT-ES should be working on as well as its role in IT We should try now to profit from a discussion on any issues, concerns, ideas that you have
