The Soviet Union stressed the need for people to do things together to benefit the whole and collective farms were one example of this concept.

Although the American and Soviet Soldiers hoped for friendship between their countries, the two countries’ economic and political systems were incompatible, and they had built up resentments toward each other over previous events.

The Soviet Union built a wall that separated Communist East Berlin from democratic West Berlin and anyone attempting to cross the wall without permission risked being shot by East German soldiers.

Senator Joseph McCarthy, a republican from Wisconsin, took advantage of people’s concerns about communism and started accusing people of being communists even though he never had any real proof or evidence.

To help ease veterans’ return to civilian life, Congress passed the GI Bill of Rights in 1944 that encouraged veterans to get an education by paying part of their tuition.
