Setting and Background This story takes place in an unknown time in the ancient past. The Iroquois lived in longhouses and the name Iroquois means “people of the longhouse” Author Mr. Bruchac has drawn on his experience as a member of the Abenaki tribe and feels that his stories have “much to teach us”

Characters Old Chief- needs someone brave to find out what happened to the missing tribe members Swift Runner-characterized a puny tribe member, he takes the wampum from the old chief and sets out on his journey. He listens to stories of his elders and knows how to defeat the Great Bear. He grows mentally and physically throughout his journey and becomes a great warrior and healer

Grandmother- attitudes towards her grandson are pride, respect and confidence. She gives him 5 things to carry on his journey 1) His grandmother gives him a bow that he is able to string 2) A cap with four hummingbird feathers in it 3) Four pair of moccasins 4) CORNMEAL AND MAPLE SUGAR= FOOD 5) give him advice Swift Runner takes a dog with him

Nyagwahe- is the Great Bear Swift Runner chases after. He has the ability to change form. He is chased down and begs for mercy. Instead of being shot in the heart, Swift Runner decides to aim for his foot because it is the bear’s only weak spot. Knowing he is defeated, the Nyagwahe pleads, gives Swift Runner his teeth and leaves forever. His great teeth has the power to heal.

Plot The village men all respected the Great Peace. One day some of the Seneca go to visit the Onondaga, they do not return. The village wants a brave warrior to discover the reason. The young men in the village fear the challenge and when no one volunteers, the Old Chief chooses a boy named Swift Runner. Swift Runner discovers and defeats a monster bear, brings his people back to life, and grows into a strong warrior and a healer.
