Analysis and Evaluation UNIT To pass this unit, you will be able to: Understand, analyse and evaluate straightforward texts Understand, analyse and evaluate straightforward spoken language

What you can expect from your N4 experience in English Reading! In S3 we devoted a lot of time to reading for these reasons: Reading is fun. Reading improves our confidence with handling texts. Reading improves our awareness of how to use writing techniques. Reading improves our knowledge of vocabulary. Reading influences and improves our writing.

Reading – Analysis and Evaluation We expect you: To take responsibility for keeping up your personal reading (novels, newspapers etc). To be active readers – thinking about the purpose of a text; identifying writing techniques and their effects - this is analysing and evaluating. You can expect from us: Opportunities for personal reading. Support to build your skills from S3 so you can be successful in identifying the purpose of a text, writing techniques and their effects.

Critical Essays These are pieces of writing about texts we study. These essays show how much you understand about what a writer has tried to do.

What you can expect from your N4 experience in English Listening! There will be a real emphasis on the importance of listening. We will be looking for evidence of successful listening.

Listening – Analysis and Evaluation We expect you: To show understanding of what you are listening to. To show awareness of how tone of voice, volume etc affects meaning. To show awareness of how body language affects meaning. You can expect from us: Support in developing listening skills, in combination with talking skills. Questioning and observation to gather evidence of your listening.

Creation and Production UNIT To pass this unit, you will be able to: Create and produce straightforward written texts. Take part in straightforward spoken interactions.

What you can expect from your N4 experience in English Writing! By now you will have tried many different types of writing. Stories Poems Personal / Reflective Persuasive Writing to inform (articles, posters etc) We will build on that knowledge to raise the quality of your writing even further. Creative Discursive

Writing – Creation and Production We expect you: To select even better vocabulary. To focus on spelling. To carefully consider paragraphing and punctuation. To write in detail. To explain your points carefully. To produce pieces of writing at least 300 words long. You can expect from us: To be set the challenge of creating and producing writing that reflects the best of your ability. Opportunities for writing in a range of genres. Support in the development of your use of writing techniques.

What you can expect from your N4 experience in English Talk is another excellent way of demonstrating and contributing what you know. We will develop our skills with: Paired work Group Work Group Discussion Debate Class Discussion Presentations (group / individual) Talking!

Talking – Creation and Production We expect you: To participate in all talk tasks. To develop skills in a variety of talk situations. To become able enough to sustain a talk situation for at least 3 minutes. You can expect from us: A variety of talk opportunities – formal and informal. Support in developing your talk skills.

Added Value Unit You will be independently required to use your advancing language skills in reading, listening, writing and talking, to investigate a chosen topic. What is required from you? Information selected carefully from at least 2 texts. Evidence of your skills can be presented either as a piece of writing, or as a talk. Respond to questions about your finished product.

Literacy UNIT In order to complete National 4 successfully, you must demonstrate a standard of literacy – reading and writing accurately without support.
