1 Succeeding in a Career Floral Design

2 Corporate Culture Definition: unique characteristics that make the organization different.  Observe how people interact with each other.  Try to determine who has the power to make decisions.  Listen.  Ask questions.

3 Appropriate Dress  Classified as Formal, Business Casual, or Casual dress.  Formal dress-shirt, jacket, and tie for men and a dress or suit for women.  Business casual-slacks, a collared shirt, and often a jacket; women can wear a skirt and blouse.

4 Business Etiquette *Definition: professional standards.  Show a positive attitude.  Be dependable, honest, and trustworthy.  Show up for work on time everyday.  Do what you say you will do.  Avoid gossip.

5 What Employers Want Basic Qualifications-  Employees able to pass a drug test.  Employees must possess basic reading and math skills.  Employees must be willing and able to learn.  Employees must be able to get along with their coworkers and supervisors.

6 Scans  Secretary’s Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills They identify the competencies critical for every person’s work success.  Competencies: skills you ought to possess to ensure a long and fulfilling career.

7 If you are weak in… 1. Skills and Personal Qualities:  Basic Skills -reads, writes, math, listens, speaks.  Thinking skills - creatively, makes decisions, visualizes, analyzes.  Personal Qualities- responsibility, self- esteem, sociability, self- management, integrity, honesty.

8 Cont… 2. Workplace Competencies:  Resources-identifies, organizes, plans, allocates. You should be able to~ A. Explain how to set goals. B. Identify and explain the needs for the project, such as materials, time, budget, human resources. C. Identify the steps needed to reach the goal or complete the project.

9 Cont…  Interpersonal-work with others. A. Explain experiences of working with others as a member of a team B. Lead a team C. Teach others D. Work with people of various back grounds E. Manage conflicts.

10 Cont…  Information-acquires and uses  Systems-understands complex interrelationships.  Technology-works with a variety of technologies.

11 Key Characteristics and Skills  Attend every day.  Be on time.  Work cooperatively with others.  Be able to read, write, and compute.  Set goals and be organized.  Motivate others toward goals.

12 Attitude  Smile!!!  Think pleasant thoughts.  Change negative thoughts to positive ones.  Surround yourself with positive, upbeat people as much as possible.

13 How does your attitude about your work influence:  How much money you make?  The people with whom you associate each day?  Your sense of self- esteem?  Your status in the community?

14 Communication:  Plan what you want to say so you don’t have to think it out as you speak.  State the purpose of your communication so your listener or reader doesn’t have to figure it out.  Use words the listener or reader understands.  Don’t preach, ramble, or talk down to your listener or reader.  Keep your message clear and to the point.

15 Barriers to Career Growth  Actual barrier: an obstacle that prohibits you from being able to do your job.  Perceived barrier: an obstacle that exists in people’s minds.
