Process for Amending the US Constitution (27 so far…!) Proposal: –by 2/3 vote in both Houses of Congress (all 27 this way) –by a national convention, called by Congress at the request of 2/3 states Ratification: –By ¾ of state legislatures (now - 38 of 50 states) (26) –Ratified by conventions, for that purpose, in ¾ state

4 th Amendment 4 th Amendment – No unreasonable searches and seizures. Must have a warrant 5 th Amendment 5 th Amendment – No Double Jeopardy; Right to remain silent. No property taken without compensation. Due process of law, 6 th Amendment 6 th Amendment – Must be told of charges; Trial by impartial jury; lawyer Speedy and held in public trial. 8 th Amendment 8 th Amendment – No cruel and unusual punishment and no excessive bail

2 nd Amendment 2 nd Amendment – Legally allowed to own a gun. 3 rd Amendment 3 rd Amendment – No housing soldiers. 7 th Amendment 7 th Amendment – Right to a jury in a civil case. 9 th Amendment 9 th Amendment – People allowed to have more rights NOT mentioned in the Constitution. (ex. Privacy) 10 th Amendment 10 th Amendment – Power of the federal government is limited. Powers not mentioned in the Constitution go to the states/local government or people

13 th Amendment 13 th Amendment – Outlawed slavery. 14 th Amendment 14 th Amendment – All citizens are equal under the law. US citizenship for those born in country 15 th Amendment 15 th Amendment – No state may deny a person (males) the right to vote based off of race.

17 th Amendment 17 th Amendment – Voters can elect senators 19 th Amendment 19 th Amendment – Women can now vote. 23 rd Amendment 23 rd Amendment – Citizens in D.C. the right to vote for president. 24 th Amendment 24 th Amendment – No poll taxes. 26 th Amendment 26 th Amendment – Voting age is 18.

11 th Amendment 11 th Amendment – Limits on lawsuits against states. 12 th Amendment 12 th Amendment – Revises how the president and vice-president are elected by electoral college. 16 th Amendment 16 th Amendment – Congress can levy an income tax.

20 th Amendment 20 th Amendment – Changes dates of Congress & President terms. 22 nd Amendment 22 nd Amendment – President can only serve two terms or max 10 years. 25 th Amendment 25 th Amendment – Succession to the presidency (disability other health). 27 th Amendment 27 th Amendment – No Congress pay raises until the next term.
