According to Mirriam Webster Dictionary: Cultural - of or relating to a particular group of people and their habits, beliefs, traditions, etc. Diversity - the quality or state of having many different forms, types, ideas, etc. OR the state of having people who are different races or who have different cultures in a group or organization

Y ES, THEY ARE …. DEPENDING ON YOUR CULTURE Healing Talisman,: an object held to act as a charm to avert evil and bring good fortune. 2: something producing apparently magical or miraculous effect. Used in Asian and/or Middle East Countries

Indian Medicine Bag A medicine bag is a traditional North American Indian container for various items of supernatural power. While anyone may have one, usually it would be the medicine man, or shaman, of a tribe who would carry one. As something that holds supernatural items, the medicine bag must also have some power of its own. They most often put things in such as animal furs, special stones and anything that meant something to them. no-one apart from the owner of the medicine bag was a loud to look inside this bag. When the person died they were buried with it.

C ULTURE Values, beliefs, attitudes, languages, symbols, rituals, behaviors, and customs unique to a particular group of people and passed from one generation to the next. Often defined as RULES NOT uniform among all members within a group, but does provide a foundation for behavior.

E THNICITY Is a classification of people based on national origin and / or culture Members of ethnic group share a common heritage, national origin, social customs, language, and beliefs. An individual does not have to practice all beliefs of the group to still be influenced by other members of the group.

C OMMON E THNIC G ROUPS : African Americans: Central / South African Countries, Dominica Republic, Haiti, and Jamaica Asian Americans: Cambodia, China, Hawaii, India, Indonesia, Pacific Island Countries, Japan, Korea, Laos, Pakistan, Philippines, Samoa, and Viet Nam European Americans: England, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Russia, Scandinavia, and Scotland.

Hispanic Americans: Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Spain, Central and South American Coutries Middle Eastern/ Arab Americans: Egypt, Iran, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Some North African Countries, and other Middle Eastern Countries. Native Americans: Over 500 tribes of American Indians and Eskimos.

Important to remember that within each ethnic group there can be numerous sub groups. Example: European Americans – Italians and Germans; two groups with different languages and different lifestyles.

R ACE Classification of people based on physical or biological characteristics. Color of hair, eyes, and skin Facial features Bone Structure Blood Type

Frequently used to label a group of people and explain patterns of behavior. Race cuts across multiple ethnic / cultural groups. It is the values, beliefs, and behaviors learned from the ethnic / cultural group that generally account for the behaviors attributed to race.

C ULTURAL D IVERSITY Differences among people resulting from cultural, ethnic, and racial (CER) factors. CER does influence an individual’s behavior, self- concept, judgment of others, and interpersonal relationship. Remember differences exist within groups and among individuals within group.

ACCULTURATION Process of learning the beliefs and behaviors of a dominant culture and assuming some of its characteristics. Occurs slowly over a long period, usually many years. Seen more in second and third generation Americans.

Sensitivity is the ability to recognize and appreciate the personal characteristics of others.
