DH (Local) Update – Elec. Media Any electronic communications between students and certified personnel must be for school-related purposes only Electronic communications between non- certified personnel and students are never permitted Exceptions: Family relationships

DH(Local) Update – Elec. Media Electronic communications include, but are not limited to: –Telephone calls –Texting –Social media (Facebook, etc.) –Instant messaging Must have permission from the campus principal and the student’s parent(s) prior to engaging in electronic communications

Employee-Student Relationships Employees are prohibited from soliciting or engaging in: Inappropriate social relationships with students Example: Engaging in non-school-related communications outside of school or extra- curricular time without parent’s knowledge Romantic relationships with students, regardless of age

Employee-Student Relationships Any employee who suspects or witnesses an inappropriate relationship must inform the campus principal or the Associate Superintendent for Human Resources Failure to report such information could lead to disciplinary action, up to and including termination

Student Transportation Transportation of students in an employee’s personal vehicle is not permitted unless: –Written permission is obtained from both the student’s parent(s) and the campus principal; or –In case of emergency Principal or campus administrator must be contacted immediately for verbal authorization prior to transport

Physical Restraint of Students Administrative Procedure F29: Restraint: the use physical force to restrict the free movement of all or part of a student’s body Do not restrain unless: –You must protect the student or others from imminent harm or physical injury –You must protect District property from imminent serious damage

Physical Restraint of Students Any employee who physically restrains a student or observes restraint by another employee must report to a campus administrator Restraint includes, not limited to: –Holding or grabbing a student by the arm, hand, shoulder, face, head, or hair –Holding or grabbing a student by his or her clothing or backpack –Using CPI techniques

Physical Restraint of Students Restraint must be: –Limited to the use of such reasonable force as is necessary to address the situation –Discontinued at the point in which the emergency no longer exists –Implemented in such a way as to protect the health and safety of others

Physical Restraint of Students Restraint does not include: –Limited physical contact to promote safety, teach a skill, or provide comfort –Limited physical contact (e.g., an open hand placed on an elbow or shoulder) to guide or redirect a behavior
