Victor Guarino HEP-ANL SC Design Effort  Overview of what has been done in the past.  Current SC Design Concepts Krakow concept DESY-SC Concept  Near term plan for engineering  Planning for the PTDR

Victor Guarino HEP-ANL Schwarzschild-Couder Design 4 years Old  Worked with UCLA on a Schwarzschild-Couder Telescope.  Performed the structural design and motion system analysis.  Worked on second iteration of a functioning prototype design.  Complete cost estimate was obtained for the first iteration of the design.  Developed complete drawings for the 2 nd iteration that were be used to get a cost estimate.

Victor Guarino HEP-ANL Schwarzschild-Couder Design 4 Years Old  The design was iterated over time and the point spread function evaluated by UCLA.

Victor Guarino HEP-ANL Schwarzschild-Couder Design 4 Years Old  The old design was supported from a main ring at the outer radius of the primary mirror.  The secondary mirror was supported by trusses from the outer radius ring of the primary.  The camera was supported by trusses from the inner radius ring of the primary. Camera supports do not shadow mirrors.  The primary mirror was stiffened by a truss network which also acts as the counterbalance.

Victor Guarino HEP-ANL Two Current Concepts  Old design was “HESS” like.  There are many concepts that can be considered – we are restrained though by available recourses – In the short term we have to focus on concepts that can be adapted to the DESY motion system.  Two current design concepts are being considered: Krakow design concept Primary supported concept

Victor Guarino HEP-ANL SC Design Mounted on DESY Positioner

Victor Guarino HEP-ANL SC Design Mounted on DESY Positioner

Victor Guarino HEP-ANL SC Design Mounted on DESY Positioner  Preliminary caluculations indicate that the SC OSSwill have similar mass and moment of inertia to DC OSS  Can be mounted directly onto existing DC MST motion system – minimizes engineering and development time.  Tower can be shortened so that the camera is only 3m above ground for servicing.  Shortened tower will allow Primary and secondary mirror structures will be close to the ground for mounting mirrors.  Structural analysis is being performed to achieve the physics performance.

Victor Guarino HEP-ANL Krakow Design Concept See Next Talk

Victor Guarino HEP-ANL Where do we stand on a Design??  Only a 4 year old design has been evaluated for performance (PSF).  Other design concepts exist but have not been evaluated structurally for performance or for cost.  Do we have a true baseline design? Neither current concept have been evaluated structurally for performance/shadowing/fabrication/wind loading/natural frequency/cost and adaptability to the DESY DC-MST motion system.

Victor Guarino HEP-ANL Structural Analysis Needed  Structural analysis is needed to evaluate the deformations of OSS of each design concept.  Performance of the OSS evaluate by PSF calculations that are based on mirror deformations.  UCLA has provided locations of mirror segmentation that can be used to create a realistic model of the primary/secondary mirror supports and to realistically evaluate the PSF. 14 Victor Guarino HEP-ANL Structural Analysis Needed FEA analysis has begun on the two concepts presented. Need evaluation of performance.

Victor Guarino HEP-ANL Moving Forward…….  In the MRI there is no support for developing a new motion system – assumption is that the DESY system is adopted with minimal modification.  Need to evaluate concepts and determine a baseline based on performance/shadowing/cost and adaptability to DC- MST motion system.  Perform detailed structural analysis and develop fabrication drawings.  Strong engineering collaboration developed between ANL/DESY/Saclay/Zurich can be used to develop the SC design.  Krakow group potentially can contribute engineering resources.

Victor Guarino HEP-ANL Steps To Develop a Design in the Near Term  Complete the PTDR  Define specifications (started and discussions later today)  Define mirror locations and mounting points (UCLA)  Develop the ability to calculate telescope performance (PSF) based on mirror deformations. (UCLA)  Perform the structural analysis on promising concepts. Examine mirror deformations to understand the telescope performance. Use this evaluation to select a baseline design.  Work closely with DESY group on integrating the DC  Optimize the design for performance and cost.  Develop fabrication drawings – obtain construction quotes – perform final detailed analysis.
