Where do you start…? NOMEK 2011 Helsinki 9th of May
4
Some kind of overview image…? NOMEK 2011 Helsinki 9th of May

…quicklook ECMWF? NOMEK 2011 Helsinki 9th of May

…and quicklook HIRLAM?

Mesan: A tool for analysis! NOMEK 2011 Helsinki 9th of May
8
A model parameter is a simulated observation net with very good coverage! NOMEK 2011 Helsinki 9th of May
9
A remote sensing parameter is a, more or less, real time observation net often with very good coverage! NOMEK 2011 Helsinki 9th of May

10 NOMEK 2011 Helsinki 9th of May Use what you have and… …use the best you have! Don’t waste time!
11
Precipitation (amount and phase) Clouds (amount, height, water content, phase, particle size,...) Aerosoles (pollution, sand, volcanic ash etc...) Temperature, water vapour and ozone in the atmosphere Wind, velocity and direction Snow cover and characteristics SST (sea surface temp) and ice characteristics Sea surface state (algaes, oil pollution) Currents and tide, wave height, water level (also big lakes) Surface humidity... Some useful remote sensing parameters!
12
Also remote sensing has more than two dimensions! NOMEK 2011 Helsinki 9th of May
14
Data from satellites can be used in more ways than just as a look from above!
15
Radar measurements are 3D They are made on conical surfaces…. …and they are processed from polar volumes to 2D projections
16
Dangerous illusions Beautiful maps may make you forget the 3D nature of atmosphere. On the other hand, the 3D nature may give you just the right parameters to be compared.

Summary, so far… There are many tools in your hands There are different data sources: models, satellites, radars There are also different ways to visualise the data Selection of the right data and right visualisation of it is important However, what is right depends on situation NOMEK 2011 Helsinki 9th of May 19
