Athens Vs. Sparta Universals of Culture = U of C Email me if you have questions.

Review rubric and list on page 4. The Questions to complete are on page 3 Review Rubric and check list- must be turned in! All nine U of C that we talked about in class in November, are in this packet. There is information/examples for both Athens and Sparta for each U of C.

Example answer using Universal of Culture (U of C is underlined): If you were a dog, in which would you rather live? Why? Wealthy Athenians enjoyed luxuries and had a great diversity of material goods. As a dog, I would prefer to sleep on a soft cushion. I am also a family dog, so the social organization in Athens, with families living together, appeals to me.

Use a different color to annotate each subject of the assessment questions: 1.If you were a young teenage girl of the citizen class, in which city-stat would you rather live? Why? 2.If you were a slave, in which would you rather live? Why? 3.If you were a boy of the citizen class, in which would you rather live? Why? 4.If you were a young soldier, in which would you rather live? Why? 5.If you were a wealthy person of the citizen class, in which would you rather live? Why? Girls grow up to be women and boys grow up to be men. Keep that in mind when annotating.

The next slide is an example of the Social Organization Universal of Culture is highlighted. The information on the slide in blue may help answer question # 3. The info in orange may help answer #2, the pink may help with #1, and the green may help with #4. Go through each U of C and highlight/color code the information on statements that clearly jump out at you as a possible example you can use to answer the questions. Then answer the questions. **Level 3+ is to create a Venn diagram/T chart comparing these two city-states. If you have everything color coded, it will be very easy to see similarities and differences for each of the nine U of C.
