3 Career Day is an annual school wide and community event intended to provide all WHS students an opportunity to explore different career and occupational options by attending, listening to and being active participants in presentations given by a variety of real- life professionals, many of whom are WHS Alumni! Purpose

4 Career Day Schedule 8:10-8:20Tiger University 8:25-8:45 Keynote Speaker (in gym) 8:50-9:30 Presentation 1 (Period 2) 9:35-10:15 Presentation 2 (Period 3) 10:20-10:40 Brunch 10:45-11:25 Presentation 3 (Period 4) 11:30-12:10 Presentation 4 (Period 5) 12:15-12:55 Presentation 5 (Period 6) 12:55-1:40 Lunch 1:45-2:25Tiger University 2:30-3:15 Pep Rally/ Activity (in gym)

5 Student Expectations Treat presenters with respect Represent WHS as a student of great character There will be zero tolerance for poor behavior Prepare questions for presenters ahead of time Take notes during each presentations On Friday Oct. 19,you will report to your TU class at 8:10am. Your TU teacher will give you your Career Day Schedule. It is important that you follow your Career Day schedule all day. After lunch, students will report back to their TU class at 1:14pm.

6 Note Taking Strategies Get the speaker's main points. Don't write down every word you hear. Leave blanks in your notes to add explanations later. Organize as you write. Pay attention to cues such as repetition and emphasis. Indicate main and supporting points as you go. Jot down key vocabulary, important facts and formulas. Ask questions. If you're confused, it's better to ask questions while the material is fresh in your mind.

7 Asking the Right Questions Be prepared with questions you would like to ask the presenters. Review the handout “Ask the Right Question: Career Day 2012”. Use this as a guide to help you come up with your own questions to ask the presenters. Bring your questions on Career Day.

8 All students are expected to complete a Career Day evaluation during TU at 1:45- 2:25. Students will not be released to the to Pep-Rally until the evaluation form is completed and turned in to the TU teacher. It is important that students give honest opinions about their experience with Career Day. Let us know what you liked, did not like, and ways to improve Career Day. Please give specific details. 9 Career Day Thank You Letters All students will be expected to write and turn in 2 Thank You Letters. These two letters will also fulfill a portion of your portfolio requirement. Make sure you correctly write down the names of the two presenters you plan to write letters to. Your thank you letters need to demonstrate that you were listening to the presentation. Both letters are due on Wednesday, Oct. 24 th. Letters will be collected in your TU class. For seniors – all thank you letters will be collected in your English class.

11 Career Day Ties into the ESLR’s Effective Communicator -Asking questions about your career and job interests -Talking with adults about careers and job opportunities -Writing meaningful Thank You letters showing appreciation for the knowledge that was shared and presented Responsible Citizen -Exploring different career options -Learning about different job responsibilities and duties -Being an active listener and participant in a variety of settings-employee, manager, customer service, …etc -Taking good notes about what you are learning Lifelong Learner -Preparing for future careers -Developing an education plan beyond high school -Meeting new people to create a network of support and partnerships that fosters self reflection and personal growth
