FOREWORD- “OUTLIERS” BY MALCOLM GLADWELL 6 th period
2
HISTORY OF ROSETO Roseto began as a very miniscule community in a small area of Italy called Foggia. It was locally owned by one family, it had one church, and most houses were either made with stone or tile. Life for the early Rosetans was very difficult. There was no education system, so Rosetan people were incredibly illiterate. With no proper economy or hope of economic betterment, a majority of the small population lived in extreme poverty.

ROSETANS IMMIGRATE TO AMERICA In January 1882, ten Rosetan men and one Rosetan boy sail to New York in attempt to find better job and life opportunities. They eventually find jobs in Pennsylvania. When the remaining Rosetans in Italy hear this news, 1,200 more Rosetans immigrate to Pennsylvania. The small group of Rosetans begin to develop a new town near Bangor, Pennsylvania. They plant crops, open small shops and bakeries, and make blouses for the garment trade. Neighboring towns surrounding Roseto were all of different nationalities/cultures, such as German and English. This caused the Rosetans to isolate themselves and remain richly ingrained with their Italian culture. Stewart Wolf, a physician who lived near Roseto, discovered a shocking fact about Roseto while having lunch with a local Rosetan doctor. He discovered that virtually no Rosetans have ever died of a heart attack.
4
WOLF’S INVESTIGATION Wolf decided to investigate this medical mystery. He brought in some of his colleagues and students to analyze the townspeople’s records: death certificates, physician records, medical histories, and family genealogies. The mayor of the town and his four sisters all assisted Wolf and his colleagues by allowing research and tests to be conducted in Roseto’s town council room. Every person in the Rosetan population was tested and analyzed.

CONCLUSION Wolf and his good friend, John Bruhn, concluded that Rosetans had no history of suicides, alcoholism, drug addiction, or crime. The death rate for all causes in Roseto was 30-35% lower than expected, and the death rate from heart disease in Roseto for men over 65 was roughly half the rate of the rest of the United States. The Rosetans had horribly diet and exercise habits, and many of them were heavy smokers. However, the main cause of death in Roseto was simply old age. The Rosetans’ secret was their close-knit community. It was not uncommon in Roseto for three generations to live in the same household. The community greatly respected each other and valued teamwork. Wolf concluded that community and values had a very profound effect on the lives of Rosetans and their health.
