Why Hitler?

Born in Austria (not a German citizen). Had failed to get into architecture school. Worked as a failed artist in Vienna. Served in the German Army during WW1 Radical Anti-Semite and Pan-German Nationalist

Why Hitler? Hitler became head of the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei commonly known in English as the Nazi Party. The party criticized the Govt for its response to the Depression and for accepting the humiliating terms of the Versailles Treaty.

Why Hitler? Nazi’s represented a strongly led, Nationalistic, Militaristic option to democratic government and communism. Attracted many people. Voted into power (minority government) 1933.

Why Hitler? Once in power the Nazi’s stopped reparation payments, expanded armed forces. Economic policies widely popular in Germany (Autobahns, farmers subsidized. Public projects, unemployment down)

Why Hitler? Controlled Media: used propaganda effectively (radio, film, posters, rallies) Consolidated power: banned other parties, no one free to oppose him without punishment.

Nazi Racism Nazi’s believed in a “master race” of Aryans All non-Aryans considered inferior Persecution of these non-aryans (especially jews) occurred. Jews prohibited from certain jobs and certain public areas.

The League’s Response Condemn’s Japan’s action, and tries to negotiate a settlement; Japan withdraws its membership from the league. Voted to impose trade sanctions on Italy- but oil not included in the sanctions. Allowed Italy to continue its war.

Germany’s Expansion 1936 occupies the Rhineland (German speaking) March 1938 takes over Austria (German speaking) Demanded the right to take over Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia.

Appeasement At the Munich Conference in September 1938 Britain and France agreed to let Hitler take over the Sudetenland. Why might they have agreed to this?
