2 The definition… Structured: an essay needs a clear structure to help the reader understand your points and arguments Set of arguments: relevant and specific points need to be made, developed and backed up with evidence of reading Specific question: use the assessment criteria to help you answer the questions set

4 Overall Structure Three main parts: Introduction. Set out your themes and purpose. Tell the reader what is coming up in the essay Main part: material/ arguments divided into paragraphs. Each paragraph usually has one main theme or argument Conclusion: Draw together and summarise your main arguments. Don’t put in anything new,,,

5 Step by step 1. Clarify the task – read the assessment criteria. Make an initial plan to guide your reading. 2. Research and record information. Make a note of where you get your information from 3. Revisit your plan and organise your notes 4. Reflect on and evaluate what you have done so far

6 Step by step 5. Refine your plan and write a first draft. Concentrate on main content, leave the introduction and conclusion for the moment 6. Develop your draft paragraphs, quotes, etc. Check against your plan Draft introduction and conclusion

7 Step by step 7. Final version Check grammar and spellings Proof read (get someone else to read if it helps) Read it aloud to yourself Check referencing within text Add bibliography
