Chapter Objectives: Name five traits that are used to define personality. Identify two factors that determine how your personality develops. Describe what happens to personality over a lifetime.

You will create a Vocabulary Study Guide for each unit. This review tool can be in a notebook, on index cards or written on loose leaf paper. For each term: 1. Write out the definition. -You do have a Glossary in your textbook. 2. Next, write out the meaning of this term in your OWN words. 3. List the chapter and page number for each term.

Psychologists- while studying how people think, feel, and behave, have labeled hundreds of personality types (think about your test from yesterday). Researchers consider 5 Central Traits valuable in describing how people behave relate to others and react to change. “The Big Five”

Extroversion -describes how much you like to be with other people Extrovert vs. Introvert -Extroverts are outgoing, talkative, and sociable. -Introvert are often shy, quiet, and reserved.

2. Agreeableness -this is the tendency to relate to other people in a friendly way. People who are agreeable tend to cooperate with others. -They are forgiving and good-natured. -Disagreeable trait- tend to be suspicious or hostile.

Conscientiousness -this trait describes how responsible and self disciplined you are. Are you dependable? Do you make good decisions? -They are organized, deliberate, and thorough. If someone is NOT conscientious, they are careless, and easily distracted. They may give up or become distracted and leaves tasks unfinished.

Emotional Stability People who are emotionally stable tend to be relaxed, secure, and calm- even in times of crisis. -The flip side: someone who is fearful, worried and angry. They tend to focus on the negative and expect the worst in most situations.

5. Openness to Experience If you are open to new experiences, you are curious, imaginative and creative. You would have a wide range of interests. -People who are less open are more predictable and less independent. They follow the crowd.
