3 WARM UP DESCRIBE A TIME WHEN YOUR BROTHER/SISTER/FRIEND REALLY AGGRAVATED YOU. WHAT DID YOU DO ABOUT THEM AGGRAVATING YOU? WHAT DID YOU WANT TO DO? DOES IT STILL AGGRAVATE YOU NOW WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT IT?

4 Close Reading Week 4 - Fiction ▪ Get into your groups and analyze your Close Reading packets for Ethan Fromme and Snake Boy. ▪ Make sure you have a rationale and have all of the answers recorded. ▪ Write a group response. ▪ If you didn’t turn one in, come see me to finish your work.

5 Close Reading Analysis ▪ Take out all of your CR answer sheets. ▪ I will hand out an Analysis Sheet. ▪ Count up the total amount correct that you answered from each standard. ▪ Put that number in the number correct column. ▪ Total number of questions: RL1= 10RL4= 13 RL2= 4RL5= 4 RL3= 8RL6= 0

6 Close Reading Analysis ▪ Next, write the percent correct in the last column. ▪ You will find this by dividing your number correct by the total number of items. ▪ After finding all of the numbers, write your strengths and weaknesses at the bottom. ▪ Write down the reading strategies for your weaknesses

8 Direct Objects A direct object receives the action of an action verb.

9 Direct Objects It answers the question “What?” or “Whom?”

10 Direct Objects To find the direct object, first identify the action verb of the sentence.

11 The boy hit the ball. In this sentence, what is the action verb?

12 The boy hit the ball. In this sentence, what is the action verb? Action verb: hit

13 The boy hit the ball. Now ask yourself the question, “What or whom did the boy hit?”

14 The boy hit the ball. The boy hit the ball, so ball is the direct object. It receives the action of the verb.

34 LotF News Report Get into your 4 person groups. I will assign a chapter to you. You will have to create a news story for that chapter. It must include: Headline ->One sentence explaining the main event of the chapter Subhead->A one sentence elaboration of the headline (explaining it) Lead->Overview of what happened in the chapter. (1 st sentence in a news story) News Story-> Details surrounding the chapter. Key events and their importance.

35 Headline: Ship Passes Island Unnoticed Subhead: Signal fire allowed to go cold at critical time Lead: Several boys on the island noticed a ship passing on the horizon today, and in a stunning revelation, they found that the signal fire was allowed to go cold so that the assigned attendants of the fire could join in a pig hunt. News Story: When the boys noticed the ship, Ralph, the chief of the tribe, and several others raced to try to revive the fire but arrived too late. The ship passed on without noticing that the boys were on the island. Jack and his hunters, including Samneric, who were assigned to keep the fire going, returned to the scene of the fire with their first kill, a young pig. A loud confrontation between Ralph and Jack ensued, and when Piggy accused Jack of irresponsible behavior, Jack assaulted him and broke his glasses. Word is that a feast of pig followed. We will have more details as they are made available to us. Chapter 4
