 First computer created about 50 years ago but not sold until 25 years ago.  1951: The Eckert and Mauchly Computer Co. sells the first commercial computer, the UNIVAC I (Universal Automatic Computer) to the U.S. Census Bureau.  1975: Bill Gates and Paul Allen form a partnership known as Microsoft to write computer software.  2007: Windows Vista is released. Spotlight on Introduction to ComputersChapter 15 Examining the History of Computers

 The desktop computer is the name given to computers that sit on a desk.  The laptop computer is a smaller computer with the keyboard, processor, monitor, and mouse all in one portable device.  A tablet computer is a computer used with a stylus that allows the user to write on the screen.  A stylus is a small stick used to write on a tablet computer or select items on a PDA.  A handheld computer is a computer designed to fit in your hand or in your pocket. The handheld computer is also called a personal data assistant (PDA). Spotlight on Introduction to ComputersChapter 16 Identifying Different Types of Computers

 Hardware is the pieces of the computer that you can touch, such as the monitor, processor, keyboard, and mouse.  Software is programs or instructions that make the computer function.  A monitor is a part of the computer that looks like a television screen.  The screen is the glass or plastic part of the monitor that we look at.  A flat panel monitor is a thin display monitor with a liquid crystal display (LCD) screen.  A cathode-ray tube (CRT) monitor is a traditional display monitor used with a desktop computer. Spotlight on Introduction to ComputersChapter 17 Differentiating Between Types of Monitors

 The processor, also known as the Central Processing Unit (CPU); this is the “brains” of the computer.  Tower is slang for a vertical processor.  A hertz (Hz) is the measure of cycles of electricity per second. The more hertz your computer has, the faster it can process information. Spotlight on Introduction to ComputersChapter 18 Examining the Processor

 The hard drive is the permanent storage where all programs are saved.  A byte is approximately one character or letter.  A bit is one code that the computer can understand to tell it to do something. It takes eight bits to create one byte.  RAM is the place inside your computer that is used for temporary storage, such as when you open a program.  The modem is a piece of equipment that allows your computer to connect to the Internet.  The graphics card is a card that plugs into your computer to allow it to display pictures on your screen. Spotlight on Introduction to ComputersChapter 19 Looking Inside the Processor

 Ports are plug-ins found in the front and back of the processor.  The disk drive is a device that enables your computer to save files and other information onto a disk.  Input devices are equipment that we use to enter data into a computer. Spotlight on Introduction to ComputersChapter 110 Looking Inside and Outside the Processor

 Ergonomic keyboards are keyboards that are shaped differently to help prevent strain and pain on wrists and hands.  The keyboard we use today is called the QWERTY keyboard.  You can find several designs of ergonomic keyboards: The “split” keyboard, “curved” keyboard, and a vertical keyboard. Entering Information Using a Keyboard Chapter 1Spotlight on Introduction to Computers

Entering Information Using a Mouse Chapter 1 Spotlight on Introduction to Computers  A mouse is an input device used to point to and select items on a screen.  A mouse pad is piece of rubber or foam that sits under the mouse and helps prevent lint and other dirt from getting in the ball and hindering movement.  An optical mouse is a mouse that does not have a ball; it uses an “eye” to track movement.

Entering Information Using Other Input Devices  A scanner is the input device that can make a copy of a photo or text and enter it into the computer.  A touch screen is an input device that allows you to enter information by touching the screen.  Voice-recognition software is software that recognizes the words spoken and enters them into the computer, eliminating the need to enter a lot of information using a keyboard. Chapter 1 Spotlight on Introduction to Computers

 Computers affect all parts of our lives.  Nearly all careers are impacted by computers.  Computers have made our lives easier and safer.  Computers were first sold to the public only about 25 years ago.  A traditional computer is made up of a monitor, processor, keyboard, and mouse. Chapter 114 Spotlight on Introduction to Computers

Summary (continued)  Hardware is the equipment that we can touch.  Software is the programs that run our computer.  The processor contains many important parts.  There are a variety of input devices that can be used to enter information.
