How do things make louder sounds? How do things make higher sounds? Which of these will make the lower sound and why?

4 Answer the questions in whole sentences on the same page as last week.
What vibrates when you hit a tuning fork? Answer: When you hit a tuning fork, the tuning fork vibrates. Why does a smaller tuning fork give a higher note. What vibrates when you pull a string on the guitar? Why does a tighter string give a higher note? What vibrates when you blow in a bottle? Why does less water in the bottle give you a lower note? What vibrates when you sing?

How are the particles arranged in solids, liquids and gases? In solids the particles are closer together so the sound wave travels more easily. In gases the particles are farther apart so the sound wave doesn‘t travel as fast. Would sound travel through a vacuum?

8 Complete the worksheet.
Then answer these questions: How could you show in an experiment that a tuning fork vibrates when it makes a noise? When a thunderstorm is far away, you see the lightning before the thunder, why is this? Sound needs a material to travel. Describe an experiment to show this is true.
