What challenges does North America face in being energy secure?

Energy Security ‘access to reliable and affordable energy sources’ To be an energy secure country you must have surplus energy For North America to become secure they must adopt renewable energies, such as solar and wind USA – currently 80% is fossil fuels

Pre-release info Demand is exceeding production (figure 2) Crude oil production may have peaked (page 3) Canada has surplus energy (figure 2) Mexico has surplus Oil & Gas but has to import Coal (figure 2) USA has deficit in Oil and Gas and has surplus Coal (figure 2)

Reducing Security China and India’s development means it is harder for North America to stay energy secure because of the higher prices and more competition for oil. USA don’t have a good energy mix, they should use more coal to match their supply.

Eliminating dependency Dependence on the Middle East Continental Shelf developments were stopped but re-allowed in 2008 to avoid dependency Also nuclear power plants were allowed Biofuels are being developed
