About Zeus temple In the year 450 B.C., the people of the city Olypia decided to build a temple in honor of the king of the gods, Zeus. The temple was very beautiful, but many considered it to be too simple. Therefore, the Olympians asked a sculpor, Phidias, to make a statue to putin the temple. Phidias agreed, and the result was amazing. He created a 40-foot tall statue, made completely out of ivory. lvory comes from elephant tusks. The statue was of Zeus sitting on his throne, wearing a gold robe. He had a crown of leaves on his head and a scepter, which is a rod that a king holds, in his hand. Later, the statue was moved from the temple in Olympia to a palace in Constantinople. Unfortunately, the statue was destroyed in a fire in 462 AD. but Phidias's statue of Zeus was truly one of the wonders of the Ancient World.

Cult of Zeus The major center where all Greeks converged to pay honor to their chief god was Olympia. Their festival featured the famous Games. There was also an altar to Zeus made not of stone, but of ash, from the accumulated remains of many centuries' worth of animals sacrificed there. Outside of the major inter-polis sanctuaries, there were no modes of worshipping Zeus precisely shared across the Greek world. Most of the titles listed below, for instance, could be found at any number of Greek temples from Asia Minor to Sicily. Certain modes of ritual were held in common as well: sacrificing a white animal over a raised altar, for instance.
