2 Objectives Differentiate between positive and negative stressors by identifying the emotional response to each type List six ways to eliminate or decrease stress Explain how time management, problem solving, and goal setting contribute to reducing stress

4 What is Stress? The body’s reaction to any stimulus that requires a person to adjust to a changing enviroment Change ALWAYS initiates stress

5 Stressors The stimuli to change, alter behavior or adapt to a situation Can be situations, events, or concepts Can also be external or internal forces – Ex: Heart attack (internal) – Ex: New job (external) What are some other examples of internal and external stressors?

6 No Matter What, A Stressor Will Cause The Body to Go Into an Alarm or Warning Mode “Fight or Flight”  physical changes When warning is received from a stressor, the sympathetic nervous system prepares the body for an action Adrenaline, the hormone from the adrenal glands, is released in to the blood stream Blood vessels to the heart and brain dilate to increase blood circulation to these areas Blood vessels to skin and other internal organs constrict resulting in cool skin, decreased movement in digestive tract, and a decrease in the production of urine Pupils dilate to improve vision Saliva production decreases and the mouth becomes dry Heart beats faster, blood pressure rises, and the respiratory rate increases These actions help provide the body with a burst of energy and the stamina needed to respond to the stressor
