Tragedy A story that shows the downfall or destruction of a noble character or outstanding person due to a flaw within themselves.

Shakespeare Background Born 1564 in Stratford-Upon-Avon Never went to college, which was common for men of his social status At 18 he married Anne Hathaway (she was 26) 3 kids: 2 girls and 1 boy (boy died as a child) Died in 1616 in Stratford Both of his daughters died without children. There are no Shakespeare descendents.

Wife 2: Anne Boleyn Married Henry in 1533 (the same year he divorced Catherine) Gave birth to: ELIZABETH in September of the same year 1536—Anne charged with adultery and beheaded

Wife 3: Jane Seymour Married Henry 11 days after Anne was beheaded (He was 45. She was 28.) Gave birth to: EDWARD in 1538 She died 3 days later.

HOMEWORK Go home and research the following terms to prepare for reading (include examples for literary devices): – hurly-burly – wyrd – familiars or imps (belonging to witches) – paradox (literary device) – foil (literary device) Your research needs to be recorded on notebook paper with detailed descriptions. This will count as a research grade—20 points each. You must list the name of the website you find each one from. Make sure you only use credible sources. Points will be docked for untrustworthy sources.
