Section 1- Europeans Explore East

DO NOW What are reasons people explore?

For God, Glory, and Gold! By the 1400s, the Renaissance made people ready to explore. Wanted to spread Christianity. The THREE main reasons Europeans wanted to explore were GOD, GLORY, AND GOLD!

Europeans Seek Trade Routes Wanted wealth ($) by trading spices. Before 1400s, Muslims and Italians had the control of the trade routes. Other countries wanted to eliminate Italy as the middle man and decided to travel by sea.

Spread of Christianity Crusades left hostile feelings between Christians and Muslims. Thought it was their sacred duty to convert everyone.

Technology Makes Exploration Possible Ships in the 1200s couldn’t make these journeys because the ships cannot sail against the wind. Triangular masts helped transportation. Astrolabe helped tell sailors their coordinates. Magnetic compass from China helped ships navigate.

Technology

DO NOW What technology was useful for explorers during this time period?

Portugal Leads the Way 1 st European country to establish trading posts along the west cost of Africa. Had strong government support, especially from Prince Henry.

Portugal Leads the Way After exploring east, Henry was determined to get back and get the spices. Made navigation school to train mapmakers, explorers, shipbuilders, etc. Traded with Africans for gold and ivory, and eventually slaves.

Portuguese Sailors Reach Asia Bartolomeu Dias- First Portuguese explorer to sail around the tip of Africa in 1488. Vasco da Gama- First Portuguese explorer to reach India by sea in 1497. Goods were worth 60 times the cost of the trip!

Dias and da Gama

Spain Also Makes Claims Spain got jealous of Portugal and their achievements. Christopher Columbus! Portugal thought Spain and Columbus claimed land that Portugal already claimed (NOPE!)

Portugal Spain Rivalry Rivalry got so intense the Pope stepped in! Wanted to make a line separating Portugal and Spain’s territories in the Atlantic Ocean. This line is called The Line of Demarcation. Portugal said Spain got too much so the line moved west so Portugal got Brazil. In 1494 The Treaty of Tordesillas made the line official.
