1 How to: Cite your sources using MLA Format. Create an Annotated Bibliography.

2 A document or physical object which was written or created during the time under study and therefore offers an inside view of a particular event. Some types of primary sources: ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS: Diaries, speeches, manuscripts, letters, interviews, news film footage, autobiographies, official records CREATIVE WORKS: Poetry, drama, novels, music, art RELICS OR ARTIFACTS: Pottery, furniture, clothing, buildings Specific examples include: Diary of Anne Frank - Experiences of a Jewish family during WWII The Constitution of Canada - Canadian History A journal article reporting NEW research or findings Weavings and pottery - Native American history Plato's Republic - Women in Ancient Greece What is one more example of a primary source not on this list?

3 A secondary source interprets and analyzes primary sources. These sources are one or more steps removed from the event. Secondary sources may have pictures, quotes or graphics of primary sources in them. Some types of secondary sources include: PUBLICATIONS: Textbooks, magazine articles, histories, criticisms, commentaries, encyclopedias Examples of secondary sources include: A journal/magazine article which interprets or reviews previous findings A history textbook A book about the effects of WWI

4 Mnemonic device to remember the order of MLA Format: All teenagers can prepare dinner fast. Stands for: Author: Smith, Jack. Title: Religion in America. City: New York: Publisher: Dolton Co., Date: 1997. (Usually on back of title page) Format: Print, Video, Website, etc. Example of source in MLA Format: Smith, Jack. Religion in America. New York: Dolton,1997. Print.

14  Required for all categories.  Must explain how the source was used and how it helped you understand your topic.  Use it to explain why you categorized a particular source as primary or secondary.  Sources of visual materials and oral interviews, if used, must also be included.  List only those sources that you used to develop your entry.  An annotation normally should be only 1-3 sentences long.

15  Source (example): Bates, Daisy. The Long Shadow of Little Rock. 1st ed. New York: David McKay Co. Inc., 1962.  Annotation (example): Daisy Bates was the president of the Arkansas NAACP and the one who met and listened to the students each day. This first-hand account was very important to my paper because it made me more aware of the feelings of the people involved.
