Chemistry is a branch of science that has been around for a long time. Chemistry is the science that deals with the composition and structure of matter and with the changes matter undergoes. The name of chemistry is derived from the Arabic word al-Kimya.
4
Alchemist are the old chemists who are not only wanted to convert metals to gold, but they also wanted to find a mixture of chemical that would enable people to live longer and cure all illnesses.
5
Today chemistry is important and exciting subject. It is all around you;
6
It is taking place deep in the Earth and far out in space… You will find chemistry everywhere…
7
Because we may say that “life is chemistry”. Chemistry is in each point of our daily life. You may not realize it, but chemistry is all around you. Dye, plastic, cosmetic, medicine, cleaning product, textile, paper, photography, firework, weapon, fuel, glass and metallurgy are some industries interested in chemistry…
9
Matter is anything that has a mass and occupies space. Matter can be found in solid, liquid, gas and plasma states. Matter can differ from another in physical state, size, shape, color, hardness, smell, etc.
10
Is air a matter or not? Why?
11
Air is a matter composed of some gases. Air has mass and volume…
12
The thing that are not matter…
13
Electricity
14
Sound
15
Lightning
16
Light is not matter, it is a kind of energy. Lightning, sound, heat, thought and electricity are not matter too…
17
Common properties of matter are: mass & volume. These properties are depended on the quantity of matter. They can not be used to identify substances.
18
Characteristic properties of matter are melting point, boiling point, density, expansion and electricity. The value of a characteristic property does not depend on the amount of matter.
19
MASS: is the quantity of matter in an object Mass can be measured with an equal- arm balance. Its unit is kilogram (kg) or gram (g). 1kg=1000g
20
VOLUME: is the space occupied by a matter. The unit of volume is liter. We can find the volume of a liquid by using a measuring container. The unit for volume is liter (L) or milliliter (ml) 1L=1000ml
